Very new. Need advice for next steps.

Hi all. I'm 28 years old and just got my first positive home pregnancy test.

I hate to sound dull, but now what?

Do I call the office of the Nurse Practitioner who normally does my gynecological exams?

Do I choose and call an OB instead?

I'm interested in the Midwives at Mt Auburn Hospital program but I want more information before committing. Do I call them? Or would that come later?

I would contact whomever you're planning to birth with- or who you'd like to at least interview. If you've just tested and you're about 4 weeks pregnant, there's no need to rush anything. You have plenty of time to research different midwives/practices before deciding. Generally anytime up to about 12 weeks is the norm to go for your first pre-natal visit. You could go earlier if you'd like more info on what to do/not do during a pregnancy. The most important thing you can do right now is take a good pre-natal vitamin everyday, otherwise your body knows just what to do! Congrats!

Start taking prenatal vitamins ASAP.

Find out which midwives/OB practice takes your health insurance.
What general area do you live?

The midwives at Harvard Vanguard Wellesley are highly regarded and they probably take your insurance.

Congratulations!

Thanks! I've been taking prenatal vitamins for a a few months so I'm good there.

Thanks! I'm already taking vitamins and have started to pay closer attention to my diet. I've also done a little research online and found one place I'd like to call, so I guess I'll check in with them on Monday. Thanks so much!

I'm glad I saw this thread before it was moved to I'm Pregnant (otherwise, I would have never seen it.)

Hello and CONGRATS!! I'm also pregnant - with my 2nd though and I'm planning a VBAC so I have different "needs" than you at ths point. That said (and b/c noone said it) - first RELAX and try to be HAPPY and enjoy being newly pregnant ♥ THEN - do LOTS of your own research - you'll hear lots of recommendations I'm sure - but the DVD "The Business of Being Born" is a good/easy place to start - and there are lots of books - you just really want to be informed and understand all the possibilities re: labor and birth. In an effort not to sound overwhelming, that's saying enough - I remember being newly pregnant the first time - it's a lot just to take that in Again - when you're ready, READ, READ, READ - so you'll know whether it's true or necessary if someone tells you you "need" to do something. Oh - also, I've heard good things about the Midwives @ Mount Auburn - I am actually going to their "Meet the Midwives" night tomorrow - Monday, July 26th. Check their website if you're interested - they happen most months Good luck to you!!

Congratulations. On a random aside, if you do end up interviewing the HV midwives, I would ask about how their on-call works. It has been a LONG time since I had my Boston baby (8.5 years, to be exact), but while I loved my HV midwives, they shared call with two other practices, and I did not end up delivering with midwives I had met. Like I said, it has been a long time and things may have changed (and may well be different in different HV practices), but it was a thought that came to mind.
