Alternatives to Floradix?

I'm not pregnant but my iron is low. I don't like to take iron in a pill because I haven't found one that doesn't cause intestinal/bowel issues.

Floradix costs a small fortune and tastes pretty nasty. Are there any alternatives? I remember a tea I drank when I was pregnant which was high in iron. Would a tea (alfalfa?) be enough? I don't need food suggestions - just pill, liquid, tea, etc.

Thanks!

I've found that iron bisglycinate doesn't cause constipation at all. Solgar sells one version of it under the name "Gentle Iron".

Taking organic Blackstrap molasses might help. I recently heard a recommendation to take it with apple cider vinegar - you can make a tea of hot water, 1 Tbsp molasses, 1 Tbsp ACV and honey to taste... or adjust ratios to suite you!).

ETA I forgot I was going to mention Nettle tea (or even better: infusion) as well.

ahhhh - nettle tea! That's the one my midwife had me drinking during my last pregnancy. Thank you for reminding me, pianojazzgirl!

I'm going to start by trying the nettle tea and if it doesn't make a difference, i'll move on to other things.

Thanks everyone

You can also take a cell salt to aid in your iron absorption from the nettle -- look on the cell salts thread to find out which one.

We do well with ferrous bis-glycinate too (solgar is good as the pp mentioned). If the nettle doesn't fix things I highly recommend that form.

Eat liver. It is very bio available. Of course just get it from organic/grass fed animals. If you don't like the taste you can freeze it for 14 days and then cut it into small pieces and swallow them like pills.
