Vitamin D Supplements: how much do you take?

Hi,
Just wondering about everyone's vitamin D supplements. I take 1000 IUs per recommendation of my midwife, since week 8 (now at 30 weeks). If I'm in the sun all day on the beach or something I take way less.
It is a strange issue because a lot of pregnancy books say not to take more than 400 IUs (although they never actually say why not), but I live in Northern New England and have also been advised that 400 will do nothing for you, especially at this latitude...it won't even maintain a good blood level.
What do you take?

I take from 4-6,000IU daily per recommendation of my LM/ND. I have to think that 400IU is based on old data. A lot of new research has come out about vit D recently.

I also take 1000IU as well as the 400 in my prenatal. I talked to my OB about it and she thinks that much vit D is good for baby. Another lady in her office had vit D listed as a taratogen(? spelling) so I inquired. She said it's something like 20,000IU that is harmful for baby.

Right now I take 800 IU in my cal/mag/vit D supplement. Then another 200 because I am only taking 1/2 my prenatal. When I take both it'll go up to 400

I am taking 10,000IUs (yes, 10K!). My vit D levels went down after I got pregnant (apparently my little bean needed it to make bones). The highest I have ever gotten was 42 and my doctor really wants to see it closer to 70. So, I am taking a ton and hoping that it will get me there!

I take 4000IUs daily. Normally I take 2000, unless sick. I do this year round. I figure I store up a bunch in summer and then totally deplete in winter, so it's good to have a steady base going. I live in Northern Michigan, FWIW.

My midwife told me that there are recent studies that show pregnant women who take 4,000 iu a day of Vitamin D have a healthier pregnancy and less instances of Pre-E.

So, I take 4,000iu a day.

Yup. I take this much unless I've had a day out in the sun. In that case I take none.

my prenatal has 2000ius and then I get another 400 when I remember to take my prenatal DHA.
