With the little girl I nanny, I first remind them to use "gentle hands" and redirect (point out a toy that they like or suggest coloring). If it persisted I would take her on my lap and explain that I could see she was having a hard time being gentle (it was usually one little girl hitting or pushing the other) and I needed her to sit with me so that everyone could feel safe. So we do "time-ins" I don't read or play games, I just hold them with as little force as I can while not letting anyone get hurt.
