Quick question about Chickens :)

Ok, so I'm getting ready to order my chickies.... and I was just planning on doing all females and not roosters, because I'm in city limits, have neighbors, and don't want to 'bother them' with a loud rooster in the a.m. BUT, I would love to keep my flock going via my own chickies rather than having to keep ordering new chicks......
So my quick question is, are there any, um, quiet roosters out there? lol!?

I wouldn't try to "sneak in" a rooster if they're specifically disallowed; but if you have a friend or someone you know who you could barter a setting of fertile eggs from, you could put one of your broody hens on eggs (or put them in an incubator), & still get to raise chicks for less than buying already hatched ones You could also post a "fertile eggs wanted" notice at the local feed store where you buy supplies.

Yes, totally that! The last few broody hens I've had have had their mixed genetics eggs snatched away and the pure genetics put under them. They don't care as long as you catch them within the first few days of going broody. Hen raised chicks are SO MUCH EASIER than incubator chicks! They're real chickens right from the start. And so cute to see them with a mommy

And I'm SURE anyone with a rooster in with their flock would be happy to share a few eggs with you if you had somewhere to put up a note. Or, just buy some fertile eggs from the farmer's market? I would imagine that would work as well since I know of people who incubated fertile eggs from the supermarket and did get some chicks! And who knows how old those were!

We have 4 roosters right now and once they hit a certain age they are no longer "quiet" or nice! Ours we hatched as chicks from under the broody hen go to meat, this time we are going to keep one of them and hope he doesn't turn into a jerk Though I do like having a rooster to warn of predators etc.. We up until now have gotten our fertilized eggs from a friend who has roosters and great lines of hens.. Our broody bantams happily hatch and raise the chicks for us The way to go for sure compared to an incubator!
