Energy Effecient heating/cooling options

Hi there, we are currently discussing putting in some form of heating/cooling into our house - as is, we heat exclusively with wood and 'cool' with fans. However, my dad's back has been in and out for the past 2 yrs and he's starting to think its time to move to some other form of heating our house - we'd still have the woodstoves as backup/when we wanted a fire, but have something else available if his back is out or we want to go away on vacation (not currently possbile - pipes will freeze, unless you go through the hassle of draining everything...), or whatever.

We have no duct work in the house though as it was designed/built to be heated w/ wood so that was never much of a consideration... we do have a couple baseboard heaters upstairs in our bedrooms, but nothing else. So. Does anyone any any ideas on what our basic options are for heating/cooling? I remember several years ago (when he was also having back issues and contemplating this...), we looked up and found some sort of heater/coolers that you could install virtually anywhere, but most commonly above windows... common in Europe, as I recall.

Anyhow. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Recommendations??

Are you thinking of a split system?
