We had a Meet and Greet picnic yesterday to talk about ideas for getting together. I was so glad to meet more homeschoolers! We have a Yahoo group for our county. I've been on the list for three years now, and it has mostly been very quiet. The lack of group activities in our area has been frustrating, and it looks like that has been the case for quite a few families here.
So we're getting it rolling!! Yea!! There is another large homeschooling group in our area, but it is an exclusive group. I'm so glad to be a part of a group that welcomes everyone.
We're starting off with ideas for a Book Club (probably two to cover different age groups), a fitness class (trying to get that started at a local fitness club), a Cooking Club (we already have a volunteer to teach!), and playdates. Even with the fun ideas, I'm most excited about plain old playdates. My kids want to play with other kids, and I long for some Mom time with like-minded grown-ups.
Our county is big, so we have some geographic challenges. There is one largish (17,000) town in the center of the county, and small communities to the north and south of the town. To get from the northern community to the southernmost community takes at least 45 minutes. I was so glad to meet some families from our remote part of the county last night! Even if we just have a few families show up for activities down here, I would be pleased. I met some Moms last night that I probably won't see again for quite some time. I can drive to far away activites occasionally, but definitely not weekly.
