Yeah so I'm getting a bit nervous...

We went in for our first US ahead of time (7w3d) because DP's betas were wayyyy up there. On beta base, she was well above average for twins and still in the highs for triplets. The US confirmed that we were having twins , and we are very happy (despite being a bit scared... there are two ???? lol). We know we can manage with two.

But I keep hearing stories of people who thought they were having one at the first US and then discovered a twin sometime later..... like 12 w or 20 w even......

My fear ? What if they find a triplet in there ?????

Two I think we could do fairly easily..... three is another matter.... we dont even own a car that could hold all of them...

Any experience... or insight ?

Or statistics ? lol

Only anecdotal stories...that will scare you more!

I know two mamas with trips. Both of them saw one baby on their first (early) u/s. Two babies at their second u/s, and three babies at their third. Both of them were scared <bleep>less to go for their fourth u/s!!

In one of the cases, she had fraternal twins found really early, 4w or something, then got referred to a specialist who did another u/s two weeks later and saw that one of the frats had split into identicals.

In the other case, they were all fraternal, the first u/s was just to confirm the pregnancy, so was a quicky in-office. The second u/s was done abdominally, so the angles weren't good for that early in the preg. The third u/s was done by a peri at an u/s clinic, and vaginally, and they found the third baby.

I've had those same feelings!!! LOL! I always wonder if another one will pop up. My boys were so still they hardly moved and I'm measuring so much farther ahead than I did with my 1st set of twins. I can even get a 3rd different heartrate with a doppler in a completely different place than the 2 we know of. But then again babies heartrates change like lightening. In the time it takes to move the doppler one can go from 136 to 150! But you can't really argue with an hour long 21 wk u/s so I'm just sticking with knowing theres 2 in there and there won't be any more surprises coming in the future...though I dream about it nightly!! LOL!

No stats but I've never put that much weight on the betas... they correlate some, but not always, and I think it also matters what day your transfer took place on (i.e. if you transferred 3-day, 8-cell embryos vs. 5 or 6 day blasts). There are plenty of people who had sky high betas and then turned out to have just a good strong singleton who was growing well. So chances are you have two good strong embies growing well, not a third hidden one back there.

Having said that, when is your next u/s because I do have a friend who ended up seeing three a little later in the game (like around 9 or 10 weeks) after seeing only 2 in the beginning. It was a shock because they only transferred two embryos. Apparently one split into identicals.

Our first US was 7w3d and we are going in for the NT scan on friday, we will then be 11w4d so 4 weeks later. I figure if we have to find a third baby, it will be on friday...

Oh and btw, our twins are not the result of IVF so its not a matter of transfer day. They are however a product of clomid..... but we only saw ONE eeg 24 hrs b4 the first IUI... so I guess our chances are really low of there being 3 babies !

I didn't know my betas, so no idea how high they were. We missed a baby at 6.5 weeks and nearly missed him at 11, and now have healthy triplets. It has been a crazy ride, but we are surviving. We moved to a cheaper neighborhood and bought a bigger car, but we have found a way to make the money work so far.

I hope that you didn't miss a baby but you will find a way to handle it if you do. Best of luck.

When I was about 5 months along, our US tech mentioned that he had just examined a woman carrying triplets. Of course I panicked, and asked him if he was SURE there wasn't another one hiding somewhere? He looked me sternly in the eye and said "I'd stake my career on it!"

One of my friends is now 31 weeks with triplets: 2 identical, 1 fraternal. They found 2 on the 8 week US, then the third at 12 weeks (maybe? or 14 weeks, don't remember). Naturally conceived. No fertility treatments or meds.

When I went in at around 14 weeks, the doctor told me he thought maybe there was a third one hiding in there. I almost threw my shoe at him when I realized he was joking.
