can I salvage this?

I tried using some pretty flowery cotton fabric to make a simple skirt. I used a tutorial online to make it with an elastic waist. However, this fabric is not draping as nicely as the one used in the tutorial. I am thinking that I need to rip open the seams and cut some fabric off to make it lay flatter, however, I think that something like this would require a zipper or something. Is it possible to do this or should I scrap the whole thing and try again?

I know this thread is from last week so you have probably already moved on, but I just wanted to throw this out there. Was the pattern for a bias cut skirt? Sometimes if you don't cut the fabric exactly on the bias (or with the grainline for straight skirts) then you end up with it twisting around your legs. It is soooo important to get those initial cuts right so that it hangs nicely.

So what did you end up doing??!!
