We're doing a party with family and friends (about 8 or so kids coming ranging from 8 months to 5 years.) We're doing a very hungry caterpillar theme. Food is going to be a snap... all the things the caterpillar eats in the book. All in all we have about 20 people attending so not huge but not small either.

I wanted a really traditional "birthday" theme for DS's 1st Birthday so for decorations I got a bunting/flag banner, made pinwheels for centerpieces, used sheets from the thrift store for tablecloths, and got some balloons.

The bunting and crown from etsy were his birthday gift from us .

For food I got a sandwich tray made at the co-op deli and asked each of DS's many grandmas to each bring a side (fruit salad, potato salad, 3 bean salad, etc.) I made cupcakes and decorated them like lions because DS is a leo. And we had a bloody mary bar, and lemonade to drink.

There was probably about 30 adults and 5 kids.

i was also up last night trying to think of themes. i want it to be more fun for adults because babes will have fun anywhere and there's alot of friends i really want to catch up with.

i thought of doing a movie "drive-in" in the backyard with a big sheet as a screen and a projector, old couches, chairs, blankets, popcorn, etc...i really want to do it but we have an early september b-day and it would be too late at night and we don't have a garage or anything to do the movie in.

so i think i've settled on doing a "baby olympics" with like baby races, maybe toy archery for older kids, badmitten, potato sack races for adults, medals. a friend thought of getting plastic diaper covers and sharpies and decorating your baby's "uniform." i can totally picture dd in a mini headband and wristbands already.

I LOVE all these ideas!! Where can you get paper straws?

Baby olympics is genius! And I just might steal the drive-in idea for next year !

The tradition in our family is to put the little one down on the floor (on a sheet), wearing nothing but a diaper, and let them discover their little cake.

We didn't have a party though. Family was too far, and it didn't seem necessary to invite friends at that age.
