critique our budget please! - Page 2

There have been some awesome suggestions on this thread. I totally agree that your phone/internet seems high. Also, do you really need a cell phone? We have prepaids that have zero balance on them. When we go on a trip we charge one up (still no service) so we can dial 911 if need be. That's free and you need a service to do it.

In terms of saving with food, I think you could probably save if you cooked using the cheaper cuts of meat - ground meats, bone in meats (tastier and healthier anyway), stewing cuts. For example, I bought 3 lbs of "soup bones" (was about $9 total) which was actually beef osso bucco but my farmer didn't know it, LOL. I made a big, hearty stew/osso bucco with lots of veggies including an entire rutabaga (v cheap). The first night we had that on rice, second night with sweet potato mash, last night I watered it down with stock to make a "stew-p" (not enough left to have as stew for all of us) and added some orzo. Today for lunch, DD and I had the leftovers. So that was 3+ meals, all meat based. We could have used quinoa or something else if we'd wanted to avoid gluten.

I also make sure I use *all* of the animal we are eating. I hardly ever buy prime cuts (steaks etc). If I roast a chicken, I throw the bones into a bag in the freezer until I have enough to make a good stock/broth and then I freeze that.

All the activites, adults and kids seem high to me. could you enrol your kids on say, a swimming program run by the city? Ours is only $50 for 8 weeks. There is a whole book of such activities run by our city council and they are v affordable. Also, could you do more free activites or do something like buy a croquet/bocce set and play that in the backyard?

The probiotic supplement does seem expensive to me. I know you need an allergen free one, but does your DD really need to take it? Could you try lacto-fermented veggies instead?

Also, if you still have a car payment (I'm presuming on a new car) then is it still under warranty? Is the $50 necessary for maintenence every month? And gas sems very high to me, though we do not live in the suburbs. We fill our car once a month or so. Could your DP and kids do some biking for errands which would be an activity too?

Oh, I forgot - how much is goat's milk at your local HFS? And now much do you buy? At ours then gotas milk is about twice the price of organic milk - $14 for 4 litres or thereabouts. Even if I bought 4 ltrs a week (that seems like an awful lot), it would still be cheaper than your co op. And is it really necessary to drink the milk of another animal? I have recently started seeing a holistic nutritionist and she doesn't believe so and in fact told me (i haven't checked it out yet) that the calcium in dairy is not easily assimilable and acidifies (or is it alkalinizes, can't remember which) the system, causing the body to release calcium from the bones to counteract. We have drastically reduced our intake of dairy. Could you try almond or rice milk instead? You could add some coconut oil or hemp oil to add good fat.

Thanks Leila, but dd is sensitive to almond and rice as well as soy. Hemp milk, which we've tried, really really doesn't taste good. Goat is our only workable option--she doesn't really drink THAT much, and we get a good deal, we buy it only once a month and freeze it...it's kind of the best we can do for now.

But I really like your suggestions for meat, I think there's a lot we could do to buy cheaper cuts & use more of the animal.

Re: activities. Dd1 has 2 fantastic teachers: yoga & dance. So those will be her activities, and we wouldn't really sacrifice them (they are like play therapy for our anxious, SPD kid). City run programs don't hold a candle to them--given the choice of most city run activities I'd rather do nothing.

A lot of other activities we share with other homeschool families & do very cheaply (this summer we played soccer all summer for $10 per kid for example).

We live about 12-15 km away from the big city where we do our activities. We do try to cut down on trips/combine trips for sure. I'll take a look at how much we are actually spending on gas.

Oh, wow! Cuts down your options with the milks!

I was also wondering what you and DP's activites budgets are for. Perhaps you could increase the spending monies and pay for your 'activites' out of these. We get $50 each a month for everything, personal spending wise.

I would cut back on the clothing allowances, and consider dropping your landline. We save $30/mo by dropping the landline. I hope this helps! Thanks for your inspirational story/budget!
