How do you pronounce this name?

Iain.

I know how *I* pronounce it, I'm just wondering if I'm sentencing my child to a life of "No, it's pronounced ..." if we use it.

EEE an.

My friend's son's name is Ian and only one person has ever mispronounced it--ion, lol. I think people will get it just fine!

EE-an.

If you want it to be pronounced correctly, may I suggest spelling it "Ian"? Iain is going to get a lot of EE-aine. Trust me. You'll also get the occasional "Ion," but in general people recognize and totally get "Ian."

Hadn't seen that name before, my guess was EE-aine, as RedOak said.

It's pronounced exactly the same as Ian. It is simply an alternative spelling.

Oops, misread OP, lol. It never occurred to me to pronounce any variation of Ian any way besides EE an. The one person whom I've heard mispronounce it was a gentleman in his 70's.
How do you pronounce it, OP?

Yes, it's the Gaelic version of Ian. Same pronunciation. Most would pronounce it as "Ee-uhn," though I think the original Gaelic was more like "Eye-ayn". Iain is my 5.5yo and I the name. FWIW, some people look at it with their eyes crossed, but it's really not THAT weird or different. Pretty much the same people who can't figure out Iain wouldn't know Ian, either. We have more trouble with the fact that my Iain has long, curly hair (girl?) than with the 4-letter spelling of his name.
