My daughter had reactions to guar gum - which could quite possibly be in both if they were regular canned stuff. Organic foods also has guar gum in it. Anyway, it's a legume, related to soy and peanut. Also locust bean gum is a big one too.

Yikes. I hope he wasn't saying this in regards to your son with peanut allergies. I've never heard that people with peanut allergies shouldn't worry about peanut oil. That's kind of scary advice. I'd tread with caution there if I were you.

FWIW, my DH has a peanut & tree nut allergy, and most peanut oil doesn't bother him. He can eat at Chick-fil-a just fine. I think there's 1 brand of potato chips that is cooked in peanut oil that bothers him a little, but not as much as if he actually swallowed a peanut.

When I was in the early weeks of my pregnancy, I was asking the same thing- there's a family history of allergies, so should I avoid the allergens, even if I'm not allergic? Some said Yes, but most said No, there's not enough evidence to draw a conclusion. I decided that the protein I'm getting from nuts is probably more beneficial than the chance of harm from eating nuts- so, peanut butter sandwiches for me!

I hear ya. There are different levels of allergies, so it's hard to say that what your DH experiences will be what someone else will experience. We are just now learning what DD can handle and what she can't. But at age 4 and a half, she's a little more capable of letting me know if she's feeling a bit off. It's definitely not something I would risk with a 2 year old. We've experimented with things like chocolate (cross contamination) and other types of nuts. We've found which brands are okay and which aren't. Anyhow, sorry for getting us off topic....lol. Back to the originally scheduled discussion.

I actually read somewhere that the reason to avoid peanut butter in pregnancy was due to mold spores that can live quite well in peanut butter.

Now if only my pregnant brain could remember where I read that.

We choose almond butter regardless because it's just a better protein. But this isn't just during pregnancy.

I usually go for whatever I would normally eat. My diet has not changed a bit since pregnancy. If anything I ate worse during the first three months due to nausea.

Same with soybean oil, and soy lecithin. It depends. Everything my daughter got sick from was through my breastmilk, and then later food. At 2 1/2 she couldn't handle any soybean oil. Now it's just certain places. Qdoba and Chipolte have the same ingredients, but Qdoba makes her break out, Chipolte doesn't.

Food allergies don't run in my family, I was totally blindsided by what was going on with her and was told it was early teething?? Yeah at 6 weeks! Then of course the eczema was from something else, and the blood in her stool was from a virus. Ugh! But I just think avoiding food for possible allergies is next to impossible. There are so many factors involved and so many possible foods that can be allergens. I have known people allergic to mustard, bananas, tomatoes, all sorts of stuff.

I'm practically living on peanut butter this pregnancy. It's my primary source of protein.

I ate peanut butter in my first pregnancy and she did have a peanut sensitivity and now, at 4yo, refuses to eat it.

I didn't eat it in my 2nd pregnancy, and my DS has no problems with it and loves it.

I obviously don't buy into the "eating pb in pregnancy causes peanut problems in the child" thing, though, even considering my experience. If this baby winds up with peanut problems, then I might reconsider, but it'll be moot since this is my last pregnancy.

And this is part of why I don't entirely buy the vaccine link, even though it makes sense to me in some ways. One possible issue with the peanut oil in vaccines is that it's injected straight into the blood stream and doesn't go through the digestive tract at all. So it's reasonable to assume that it would have an entirely different effect on the body.

But I have always heard that the peanut oil at CFA isn't a big deal even for peanut-allergic people, because it doesn't contain proteins.

That's really interesting! The refried beans exposures were both at nice (not fancy but very yummy and well-respected) Tex-Mex restaurants. I've considered asking them what their ingredients are so I can compare. I haven't noticed any real problem with JUST pinto beans, so I do think it's something that's added to it.

He has also seemed to react to some melons, but that seems to not be an issue these days. We've avoided the beans and yogurt for quite a while now, though, and have never introduced cow's milk (he's fine with cheese). It's such a complex puzzle!

I've been eating organic peanut butter like crazy now that I can keep food down. I have a newer book about foods to eat during each trimester, and it lists peanuts and peanut butter as a great food to eat.

If you as the mother are intolerant to peanuts and are not able to digest them, then the undigested substances can leak through your gut walls (leaky gut syndrome) and can cause an immune reaction and then I've heard that that in turn can sensitize your baby to them as well... I don't remember the exact process from that point on (preggo brain). I wouldn't think that family history would matter so much as whether YOU can tolerate them or not.
Other than that the only thing I could think of that would make people say they are not ok is that almost all peanuts in North America contain aflatoxins.
Mmmm, all this talk is making me crave peanut butter!
