Children Book Rec...

I am planning my first homebirth...about 9 weeks to go. I am on the fence as to what my children will be doing at the time of the birth. I'm not sure how much they will distract me from my hypnobirthing and how much they will want to see or not to see. I am looking for some child friendly books about giving birth. I am looking for both realistic and maybe some more "cartoony" type books...I need options.

i'm not any help but i'd like to know about this too!

my ds2 likes to watch home birth videos with me on youtube... he will be 3 next month.. not sure if either of your boys would want to watch that but my ds seems to really understand that i have a baby in my belly after watching them! jsut a thought!

Videos are great! For books, "Welcome with Love" is a very, very sweet, more realistic-drawing book from the perspective of a little boy watching his brother be born. A classic and a favorite! May be hard to find.

We recently found "We're Having a Homebirth!!", which is a more cartoony, small, but sweet and thorough book. My boys have loved it, too. Google for it and you'll find sample pages.

Kids who are prepared for birth and allowed to experience it as a natural part of life generally do very well! It's good to have an extra care-taker there whose only role is caring for the child, but some families get along without that. Many siblings actually sleep through birth as it so often occurs at night.

"Welcome with love" is now titled "Hello Baby" and my daughter 2.5 years loves it. I change the names of the midwife and dog and include my daughter's name in the story. She tells people about how she is going to hold a warm pillow on my back. I hope she is sleeping but if she's around at least she has a clue what's up.

Love love love, Hello Baby and love the idea of changing the names to fit your family!

We also watched many you tube videos of women giving birth, starting with a just couple with nice music, and then progressing to ones with real labor sounds. DD was really into it, she thought it was great. I am a little more worried about dd2, she is a bit more sensitive and I am not sure where her comfort level will be yet.

Funny, Hello Baby was the original title when published in Australia. I like it much better, myself, as it goes so well with the story. I will have to see if I can find a new copy of it now since ours has been WELL loved!

Here's a picture I just love of my then-2.5-yo after his brother's birth. If you're familiar with the story, I'm sure you can guess why he is where he is! (The red brick behind him was our hearth.)

My kids have always loved one called "Runa's Birth" by Uwe and Inga Spillmann but it seems like it is nearly impossible to find anymore. And if I see it, it costs a small fortune. But it's one to keep your eye open for. I have "Welcome with Love" too which they kids liked but they just didn't love that one as much as Runa's Birth.

I have a book "Wind Rose" about a homebirth that I LOVE. Kids aren't involved in it, and it's not cartoony, but it's still fun to read. Older kids (pre-school/elementary) would probably like it more. (I think it went out of print awhile ago, as I bought mine used on Amazon)

Totally love my midwife!

So I had my visit with my midwife the other day and I asked about children's book recommendations and she says, "oh there is a great one, let me check my lending library...it went out of print awhile ago." I asked if it was the one called Welcome With Love and she says yes. I so excited to be able to borrow it...esp since the book is going for anywhere btwn $50-$200 online. Then she says, "Oh look I still have one more new copy...here it is my gift to you." I wanted to jump up and down. Then she wrote a sweet message inside to my sons Jack and Liam. I just read it to them tonight. My son Jack is so intrigued! I can't believe she had a new copy of that book! I am so grateful!
