Mama's body post-weaning--what's normal?

I'm not quite sure this is the right place for this, so if it needs moved, that's fine with me.

DD weaned on her 3rd birthday, 14 months ago. She had decided a few months prior that the last time she would nurse would be on her birthday, so we created a countdown and a story to go along with the big event. Her last time nursing was so sweet and lovely, and despite my hormone crash a few days later, the transition went pretty smoothly for her. My body had a long, challenging time adjusting to the hormone shift and I had very severe PMS for a long time, but that seems to have finally abated.

I was curious how long I would still have milk so for a few months every once in a while I would squeeze a little drop in the shower and be amused by the fact that I could do that. I would still feel faint letdown-ish feelings for many months. A week or so ago I felt that feeling and wondered if there could possibly be anything left in there. I certainly didn't expect there to be, but I gave it a little squeeze, and sure enough, there was some milky fluid in one spot and some clear oily fluid in another. There is sometimes a dull ache, particularly on the left side, (which is really what is prompting me to start this thread, actually), and my boobs are WAY lumpier than they were pre-pregnancy. I'm a little concerned that there is still fluid and that my boobs feel way different to the touch and are sometimes uncomfortable, even slightly painful.

So what were your experiences adjusting to weaning? How long did you have any milk? How different were your breasts after having breastfed for a few years? Did you have any discomfort or pain as the milk dried up? How long did it take for you to feel like your boobs were normal again (whatever your new normal was)?

we haven't stopped yet...but one of my friends still could squeeze a little milk out like you described about a year after stopping- she had nursed for 8 years straight. hopefully some other women will chime in with personal experience...

With my first DD we had a nursing strike and I was unable to get her back to the breast. I pumped till I was getting almost nothing (couple months, I was working full time) and then went to formula. So I can't answer the part about after yrs of bf but wanted to let you know that for several yrs I would let down and leak milk and could squeeze some out. My breasts were not lumpy or painful though. I talked to my mw and she had tests fun on my pituitary gland and that came back normal and it did eventually stop.
