MCT language arts

Planning on using the MCT language arts program this year. I was going to start with level 2 (Grammar Town, etc) as it seems to be the best overall level for dd. My one real concern is with the vocabulary book. We haven't ever "officially" studied roots and stems--should I also order the level 1 book for the vocabulary part.

Also, do you do all five books simultaneously? Or do you work on a couple and then move on, or what? Is there an obvious pacing?

I cannot help you with your first question, but I wanted to link you to this .pdf in case you hadn't seen it, about the pacing. It's the implementation guide for the series:

http://www.rfwp.com/samples/LA-ELEM.pdf

In case it helps you.

Thanks, that helps a lot. And, just to be safe, I think I will order all of level 2 and buy the level 1 vocab book too. I don't want to start the year by frustrating her.

Hope this isn't too late, but I don't think you need the first vocab book. We started with Caesar's English 1 and it was fine. You can always take your time with it. We'll be starting the Word within the Word 2 level next month, so we've been with it for awhile. Also fun practice remembering roots can be found at www.quizlet.com. I'm pretty sure the Caesar's English books have their lists already entered on that site for studying using games and/or flashcards. I know the Word Within the Word books are there.

Have fun enjoying the MCT books together - that's what they are best at - curling up together to read and discuss and play with!

We won't be starting MCT this year, but that PDF someone linked to has been very helpful in visualizing how to use all the components of this program. I can't wait to start!

Thanks, it isn't too late--I am just fine tuning things right now. I will start placing orders next week.

One more thing. . . do you guys buy the student book and the teacher book or just one? If just one, which?

For that level you can get by with just the teacher's edition. I think it is nice for them to have their own student book as well, but we got by just fine without. You will need both for the practice books (if you get them). At the Magic Lens/ Word within the Word level you need both the student and teacher books, except for poetry - those stay the same format through all the levels.
