Floradix Iron & Herbs is fine, isn't it?

Hi,

Just figuring out that I'm getting anemic (31 weeks prg)...a few weeks ago my hemoglobin was only 11 and the other one was only 33; I can only assume it has gotten worse, because I tested for iron only a week after I quit with some truly sickening pills, and now I am totally wiped all the time. Like, I only work a few hours a day, twice a week, and it nearly kills me these days.

So...in the interest of not getting sick/not poisoning my baby, I got Floradix Iron & Herbs liquid (I hesitated the first time b/c of the price, hence the pills). It's fine, right? I mean, all those herbs and all aren't a problem? I was super hesitant to take iron at all, b/c I thought it might not be good for the baby, and those pills made me wicked sick, but this weakness has got to stop.

Let me know...but it's not a huge hurry b/c I just ate a steak

ps. What, if I may ask, can being anemic actually do to the baby? All I know about are the side effects on the part of the mother.

Its not good for baby NOT to have iron...

cant tell you for sure if that particular floradix is fine as I dont know what herbs are in it, but if you call your doctor/midwife and ask (they will be able to tell you if it is okay or not.

floradix is not only fine, my midwife recommmends that all of her clients takes it.

it is great for keeping iron up and even really helped clear my morning sickness -- it has a bunch of b6 in it.

I was anemic in early pregnancy, and took floradix everyday for about a month - when I was retested at my next appointment my hemoglobin was on the high end of normal. I still take it occasionally if I haven't been eating super well or if I just feel a little run down.

My midwife has me on it and my previous midwife with DD #1 had me on it too!

My midwife had it sitting on her herb shelf last time I was in her office.

I just got some today. I'd say it's one of the best iron supplements. It doesn't cause constipation like some other ones do, it's very gentle.

it's fine. I gave it to my 2 year old too, better than the crappy stuff the doctor told her to take.

I would assume if the baby gets iron stores from the mother, than the babies would be lower than normal? Just a guess.

Yeah, the liquid ones are all called Iron & Herbs. FWIW, I think the "yeast-free" one has a much more distasteful flavor than the regular one, which just tastes like strong fruit juice.

Thanks for that info - I only took the yeast free one before and don't think I could stomach that while pregnant. It tasted like iron.

The first thing my MW told me to do this pregnancy was take the Iron and Herbs. It makes a HUGE difference.

I started it this week and it's helping. I used Herbal Iron with the last three pg, which is half the price, but didn't seem to help as much. Not being anemic helped me to recover more quickly and bleed less.

I have taken Floradix for the past several months and it has made a big difference. It was recommended by my midwife.

From what I have read, it is rare for a baby to be be born with an iron deficiancy because it takes what it needs from the mama. In addition to the symptoms of anemia that a pregnant mama expereinces (fatigue, coldness, loss of hair, etc.) it can lead to bad ppd. (Again, not an expert, this is just what I have read)

The concern is mainly for the mother. If you bleed more than usual after birth, you will be in more danger than someone who started out not anemic.

So do you take the Floradix in addition to your prenatal vitamin or instead of?

In addition to. However, you should wait at least an hour in between taking them. The iron binds to calcium and prevents absorption. The same would apply to calcium rich foods, for example - don't take your Floradix right before you have yogurt or cheese.

I took Floradix when I was pregnant with DS1 and fighting anemia. It was recommended by my midwife. It worked like a charm, tasted okay, and didn't cause me any (extra) constipation.
