Can I put this here? Not that I'm happy that Chelsea Clinton has a gluten allergy, but it's nice to see a mainstream mention. Apparently she's also vegetarian. (Note that I know nothing about the website below but I heard about this on the radio and wanted to share).

How interesting. I never heard that she had a gluten problem. Isn't it usually celiac, a wheat allergy, or a gluten intolerance? Can you actually be allergic (IgE) to gluten? I'm just curious... of course I had to look at babycakes' website that they mentioned, but it's all got corn. I always get my hopes up.

yup. That's cool she is having a GF cake. (Not cool she is sick though) If you are allergic to gluten your system attacks it, scaring your intestines and thus you will not get nutrients and this dying. So not a fast death just an excruciatingly painful slow death.

I didn't read the article but it could she is just being polite to her guests who may have allergies. I had gluten free cake at my baby's party. A guest asked to taste her personal cake and I was like.. uh actually the big cake was gluten free too. :P It does feel like a pound cake though so she said she thought maybe it was too. Sorry but i wanted to eat cake too so... too bad.. everyone gets gf cake :P

The article said "allergy to gluten", so it could be anything, celiac or intolerance. I've never heard of anyone having an IgE allergy to gluten. I usually just say "we're allergic to wheat/flour/gluten" depending on how sophisticated an understanding of food issues I think the person has (but then I get things like, "well, how about some spaghetti?") so my guess is that's why it's written that way by whomever wrote the article. I've always wanted to visit Babycakes. They have a cookbook, too.

Her dad, the ex-pres was gluten-free while in the White House, I recently learned. He's allergic to chocolate, too, and maybe milk.
