What is a Vulcanite Hook?

(and no, its not one that Spock uses to make scarves, lol)

I want to make this:

But I'm at a loss as to what the heck a "vulcanite hook - trifle thicker than a slate pencil". Huh?

Anyone have any ideas on what size it could be?

According to sources in a search on Google (type in Vulcanite crochet hooks http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c...=&oq=&gs_rfai=), they are crochet hooks with handles made out of vulcanite/rubber and used for yarn. Thread hooks were/are made from steel. The modern equiviant would be an aluminum hook, probably a G or H would be my guess, maybe even an F. But since it's a blanket use whatever hook that your yarn suggests.
