Holy parvo, Batman!

Geez! Our vaccinated momma dog came down with parvo a month after her pups were born...apparently there's been a rash of parvo in my county in both vaccinated and unvaccinated dogs. Mom is now doing well, still on sub-Q fluids and an antibiotic and anti-nausea medicine, but the vet said we were just going to have to quarantine the eight pups and wait and see who drops, since they are too young to be vaccinated. This just seemed unacceptable to me! But as the next couple of days went by and the pups started to have that nasty-smelling tell-tale parvo diarrhea and began acting lethargic, I knew I had to do SOMETHING! So after much research, I decided to try turmeric (yes, as in the spice) on the pups and my other healthy dog. Lo and behold, two days later, all of the pups are alive, tails wagging and no more nasty poo, hydrated and showing no signs of illness!! We've been doing puppy mash a few times a day and syringe-feeding them raw colostrum a few times per day as well. I can't believe the change!! And I can't believe that this remedy isn't more wide-spread...it took a lot of digging before it finally came up. And the only side effect so far is that my fingers are stained yellow from squeezing the gelcaps into the pup's mouths! Just wanted to share a sad-turned-happy, unexpected story.

Glad things turned out ok.
Parvo is often a wait and see virus. In one hospital I worked at we dealt with a big outbreak from SPCA pups....they stayed on iv fluids and we gave pepto-bismol multiple times a day....other places used other stronger stomach meds to ctrl diarrhea, in lesser cases just iv fluids for 24h....we had similar results, whatever the treatment.
