when can you start art?

I was reading a lovely blog where the blogger's child was making his first drawing.. and i wondered when it would make sense to a babe to scribble and crayon? I'd expect crayons to go straight into dd's mouth right now but.. when can you/have you/would you give them something like big fat crayons and paper and expect them to enjoy the use for which they are intended?

good question!
we just tried crayons at 10.5 months and she gets so mad when i show her how to press them to the paper instead of doing what she wants with them (mainly eating them and crawling around holding them)

i have seen them painting with brushes at my babes daycare babyroom so i was going to ask them.

DD is 12 months, and I bought a magnetic drawing thingy to get her started. She has only scribbled a couple of times, and she's generally not interested at all. I recommend it. I was tired of the tantrums from pulling crayons and markers out of her mouth.

I *HIGHLY* recommend Susan Striker's _Young at Art_

See if you can get it from the library, and you will probably want to buy your own. Some people are put off by it, but I have found it to be very developmentally appropriate and awesome with my kiddos.

One thing that is important to understand that at first, toddlers/babies drawing is a gross motor activity-- not a fine motor activity. So you need a LARGE surface (big paper) and basically sit the baby down in the middle of it, and let them use their entire arm (from the shoulder).

we're going to introduce crayons at one year

get some butcher paper or a really big sketch pad

My DD was an early artist and she could draw figures circles with big eyes, lines for limbs at 20 months, that is pretty advanced.

I have a pic she drew at age 2 of a stegosaurus, it is amazing she drew such an imaginative thing at such a young age.

And you can let baby "paint" with stuff like yogurt, or other edible stuff. Play with with with different textures.

And please note that not all art supplies for kids are nontoxic. It has to say NONTOXIC for it to be so. I know Crayola is nontoxic and make it the USA. They have a really cool finger paint that we love here.
