Bright blood in stool & refusing to eat

Yesterday my 16 month old had bright red blood in her stool that looked like it was actually mixed in (i.e. not from an outside fissure). The stool itself was soft. Today she had hard stool with more bright red blood. This isn't the first time this has happened but it's been a while.

I don't know what to do with her. I had my son in for something similar about a year ago and they gave him some suggestions on avoiding constipation. He was 6, though, and he eats and drinks very well, so we made a few small changes to his diet and now he's fine. My baby, though....I can't make her eat anything. She refuses almost everything I try to give her, and I've offered such a wide variety. I try spoon-feeding her, letting her feed herself, sitting her at the table with us every time we eat so she can participate in each meal whether she eats or not, etc. Even if I get it into her mouth, if she doesn't want it, she spits it right out and then sweeps her mouth with her fingers until she has removed every particle of food. What am I supposed to do?? I've never had a baby who refused food consistently for such a long period of time, all my others were little baby piggies except for a few jags here and there. I'm lucky if she takes two bites of something that I offer. She takes a milk bottle for naps and bedtime and she drinks that, but she doesn't show any interest in solids. I am not nursing at all (I'm 5mo pregnant and know from experience that there's no point for me, the baby gets frustrated from a complete lack of supply at this point and it's been a while since I weaned; there's nothing there.)

Oh wow, how stressful mama! I'd take her to the doctor...maybe there's a medical reason she isn't eating. Especially the not eating coupled with the blood...I'd go right now, personally.

If I remember correctly, bright red blood in a stool is usually indicative of a lower GI (gastrointestinal) bleed. I would Take her to the doctor now. I hope it's nothing serious though!

Food allergies/intolerances can cause both aversion and blood.

I agree. Blood in the stool, that happened more than just once, that wasn't clearly from a fissure, would send me straight to a medical doctor.

The refusal to eat is less worrisome to me, since it's such a common behavior for young toddlers, and because obviously she's sensing your worry, and unfortunately that makes them dig in their heels even more. But it is still a problem, especially with it going on so long. If she's in GI pain, that would explain it.

Things that occur to me-- dairy intolerance. My son had intestinal bleeding with cow's milk. He is allergic to the protein casein and the blood was indicative of intestinal injury from his allergy.

But I think I'd want a medical opinion. There are so many possible causes of intestinal bleeds, and some of them are serious.
