Fun naming tool

I was just puttering around on Behindthename.com, and I found this tool....

1. Enter your name (your baby name)
2. On the right side of the name page, click on "Ratings"
3. You'll get a chart of impressions of the name
4. THEN click on "Find names with similar ratings"

...it was uncanny. Several of the names we've considered were on that short list. I guess my "name style" is "Refined, Formal, Upperclass, Classic."

They totally have my name preferences pegged! WAY more accurate than nymbler was. I didn't like all the suggested names, but it's strange that many of our top 10 were in that list! Our other top name got the "Refined, Classic, Wholesome, Upperclass" label. Huh....

ETA: I should have said "enter your baby name" rather than YOUR name

my grandmother has an extremely unique name so I just had to put it in. It was totally amazing that the only year the name was charted was the year she was born. Really cool. Her name is based on our success with WW1 so it made sense that it came up when it did. So cool! Thanks for that.

HAHA I put in DH and they gave me BILs name as a similar name.

DSs name gave me Josiah which I LOVE but cant use... and Alexander which would have been this little one if she were a boy. Also several other names which I would seriously consider for a boy if we had another one (after Alexander, if we have a boy next time) Apparently my boy naming is Classic, Strong and Wholesome.

Neither of my girl names exist in that page. I guess my girl naming is just unique LOL.

My moms name is similar to the names of 2 of her 3 sisters.

MILs name is similar to her sisters.

That is REALLY neat.

Thanks for this! We STILL haven't found a name and when I pull up our sons' names it brings up several I have considered. Maybe I can use that as ammo to convince my husband I am right!

Hmm...on my name, it had my sis's name on the list, but on each of my kids' names, I liked only one total suggestion from all three lists--and one list had really weird names. But fun to try. Maybe I should try the names I'm thinking of for this baby.

Worked for us!

When I put in my name, it pulled up my DD's name (Claire) and this baby's name if it's a girl (Joanna)

When I put in my dh's name, it pulled up my DS's name (Andrew) and this baby's name if it's a boy (Joseph)

Wow. I put in the baby's name and it came up with DH's name!! My name didn't come anywhere near our girl choices though, lol. Of course I hate my name.

I guess my naming pattern must be all over the place. None of our names pulled up any of our other family members names, and I tried all of our first and middle names. Neither of my oldest dd's names were listed at all. Nor my second dd's middle name. Hmmm guess going by an initial theme for baby boys and an element theme for our girls is a little more random than I realized.

But that was a really neat tool! It is really neat to see other names that have the same "feel" as the one you or your kids have. Thanks for sharing this.

THANK YOU for posting that! I am struggling like crazy with a girl middle name that matches the first name we like, and this is absolutely perfect for finding good matches. So far I've found quite a few possibilities.

I put in dp's name and both of his middle names came up. weird!

when I put mine in a few of the names I have on a long list came up as well..

Glad you all liked it! I have to go back today and plug in our other kids' names...see what kinds of similar-feeling names come up...

Hmm, I think this only works if you like your own name! It did come up with names that are similar in ways to mine, but I wouldn't consider using almost any of them on a child (for reference, the qualities they were strongest in were feminine, refined, wholesome, and youthful). I'm going to play around with it using some of the names on our short list for this baby, though, and see if that comes up with anything good! It's fun, in any event!

Ha...I tried this with our chosen girl name and absolutely hated every name it came up with. The boy name wasn't much better. I actually had much better luck with Nymbler, which popped up several names we had considered.

Thanks for this, the website doesnt have any of my kids names in it (very unique), but I was able to put in some other names I loved and get a few new ideas... Im so stuck on a boys name

Funny - I put in DD1's name, and it came up with the name I would have chosen if this one were a girl. I put in DD2's name, and it gave me a spelling variant of DD1's name. I put in a name (it's Indian, therefore high in "strange" rating) that we are considering for this boy, and got "Frodo" as one of the similar names.

My favorite names had high ratings on Classic, Natural, Wholesome, Refined, and Masculine/Feminine.
