Zofran - pills vs. melt in your mouth

I was taking 4mg pills of Zofran twice a day and that worked well. For me, the dose would last 12 hours with no problem. My midwife wrote a new prescription and I ended up with these things that melt on your tongue. They are still 4mg but it says to take them every 4-8 hours. Do you think they will last 12 hours since the other 4mg pills did? My insurance will only give me 40/month so if I had to take these every 4-8 hours, that would only last like 10 days! My other ones will at a least last me 20 days. Does anyone out there take the melt on your tongue kind every 12 hours and does it do ok?

I believe the melt in your mouth kind is non-generic. I took them with my first pregnancy because they had no generic version then, and I actually only needed to take 1 day, but mine were 8 mg.

I took the generic pill version this time - I think it's yellow - and I was taking at least 2 pills a day. I didn't find the pills worked as well. Maybe you have the non-generic pills, I don't know, but generic pills don't seem to last as long.

However, I think both versions are only supposed to last 8 hours anyways, so if you got 12 hours from the pills, then that is pretty good, and the tabs should last that long too

I have the generic melt kind, and they work just as well as the pills. In fact, they get in your system faster because they melt in your mouth (and putting them under your tongue doesn't leave as weird of a taste in your mouth). I've been taking 8 mg twice a day.

If you're doing OK on 4 mg, I wonder if your MW would give you a prescription for 8 mg & then you could just break those pills in half? I've done that with other prescriptions to get enough pills for the month & still be covered by insurance.

lillymonster - thanks for the specifics. The pills I took and these melty things are both the generic. Neither says Zofran - it's that one that starts with an "o."

mom2fussy - I thought of that too but my midwife is going to work on getting me an exception through the insurance. If that doesn't work, I may try cutting pills. But I did try that with my 4mg pills and they are hard to cut, even with a pill cutter, because they aren't scored. Ugh!

I don't think you should have a problem with either personally. I didn't know they made generic melt in your mouth, they are easier to take, I think. They are easier to break too! I have to cut my 8 mg pills sometimes and I am always uneven, but I remember the melty kind broke easier

Also someone mentioned on here trying a place like Costco or BJ Warehouse or Walmart. I think the deal is with the insurance company and the drug store and you get more with Costco, but I may have that wrong.

In my hyperemesis experience, they work the same, the ODT ones are easier to take but have a nasty taste in mouth. Hyperemesis patients have come up with a way to take the melting ones...vaginally. Its called *hooching* lol but you can put the pill vaginally and it dissolves, seems to not carry the nasty constipation side effect when done that way too...might seem TMI but hey, I am a old school HG patient and know the tricks of the trade!
