This isn't exactly an allergy question...but I figured the allergy-crowd would be the most knowledgeable ones to ask! A little background first...DD is 13 months, and had some sort of digestive problem for her first six months (green mucous for stools, trace blood in them - no normal poops for her first 6 months). Because of her issues, I was dairy-free for her first 10 months. (at the recommendation of her pediatrician and a ped gastroent we consulted) Her poops normalized at 6 months, and were unaffected by my introduction of dairy into my diet. (the theory on cause was that her gut just needed extra time to mature) She has always been a slow weight gainer, currently 17 pounds. There isn't any evidence that she had any issues with dairy- I even tried the total elimination diet for a couple weeks and that had no impact on her stools at the time either.
So- here is the question- my naturopath recommended that we delay dairy introduction as long as possible- 18-24 months, just b/c dairy frequently causes issues...I don't remember all of his rationale. I've looked a little bit online, and I don't see any studies supporting advantages of delaying dairy introduction, for someone with no family history/risks. Is there any reason we should continue to hold off on giving her dairy? She still breastfeeds, I wouldn't necessarily give her cows milk, but introducing butter, cheese, yogurt would be a great source of calories for her! Any advice on when to introduce and what to start with? Thanks!
Oh- and she's been eating all sorts of solids for a few months with no known reaction to anything so far- eggs, tomatoes, wheat, etc.
