Regional Center case worker wants my son's SS#

She sent me an email saying it "must" be on file. I feel a little uncomfortable giving it out. What happens if I refuse? Could he be denied services?

I'd call the social security administration and ask them, but AFAIK, they can't insist on it. I wouldn't give it.

I know at my office, we MUST have your SS#, because we get reimbursed from the state for services, and to do that, we must have a SS#. But, we don't bill insurance, we get money directly from the state to prvoide our services. If we had a method of billing that didn't require a SS#, I don't think we would need it.

Ask them if they can assign him another ID number that doesn't require the SS#. They are actually violating something (federal regulation? law?) by requiring it. Our university had to change how it did IDs a few years ago because they'd been using SS#s and the feds came down on them.

I would ask to speak to a supervisor. I would ask why they "MUST" have it on file? I would explain that I'm very uncomfortable giving out my child's social security number for a variety of reasons. As the previous posters suggested, I would ask what alternative method can they use instead of the SSN#.
FWIW, we haven't had to give our child's SSN# to the school district, EI, or anyone else to get services.

Not giving the SSN# would be a strange reason to deny services. I haven't heard of it in my state, but again no one here has ever said to me I had to give my child SSN#. I guard that info very carefully because you can't be too careful of identity theft these days.
