Probiotics/Gas

Thread Starter
I'm taking a probiotic for two reasons....one is my own yeast issues....athletes'foot and a toenail fungus (and of course, general health)

the other for my son (I'm breastfeeding) who seems to have a bit of an infection from a horrible case of exzema on his face (that's another post in the allergy forum)

I'm taking one by Jarrow Formulas (Saccharomyces BouldardII + MOS)
It's vegetarian and non-dairy (which I need since I think his Exzema might be dairy related, not to mention my own issues with dairy) but it is giving me HORRIBLE gas...I can barely live with MYSELF let alone deal with me being around others (and of course I have a big big BIG social event tomorrow that i MUST attend....I'm dreading it now...) I know its the probiotic because I've tried the taking it, not taking it for days, taking it for days, etc. and it's definitley only when I'm taking it and for a couple days after....

I realize there's not anything I can do for tomorrows event to prevent this issue, but I thought maybe someone could suggest something else for later...

As an emergency stop gap you could try GAS-X which is an OTC med in drugstores.

The gas is either due to gut flora shifting, or more likely, you are not tolerating the MOS, which is an indigestible sugar. Like another similiar additive: FOS, it's a "prebiotic" and since your digestive system cannot break it down, gas is a common side effect. It is "supposed" to feed the good bacteria in the body but some people find that it may increase certain bad bacteria. Or just fermentation in the gut = gas.

There are S. Boulardii brands w/o prebiotics, I think Kirkman has one. We use prebiotic free probiotics in this house too.
