Natural Ecezema Cures

Thread Starter
My son turns 2 next week () and we are still battling this ecezema fight. It doesn't seem like the steriod cream his pedi gave him is working so now I want to try natural remedies. Any suggestions on things we can use? I've tried coconut oil and it didn't seem to do much. I'm open to all.

I swear by breast milk rubbed on the area daily. Worked for mine and my daughters (and she wasn't the one nursing)

nak....california baby calendula cream worked well for dd. cutting out dairy helps as well.

Eliminating foods one at a time until we figured out gluten was the culprit. It took a long time to get there.

We also use CJ's Butter (unscented for the babe although I love new mown hay for me!). It's really great stuff!

I love Earth Mama Angel Baby products! The lotion works fantastic for DS, and the butt balm (also can be used as a first aid) is great for flair-ups. Both, always seem to calm him immediately. I trust and love all of their products.

We use Mario Badescu control cream. A friend told me about this and really works. It's all natural so you can use a lot (unlike steroid creams) and works way better than steroid cream. It's pretty expensive but the jar does last quite a long time. Luckily for us DD's eczema has been going away when I went dairy-lite (while still nursing) and now she is dairy-free (after weaning), so yours might be food-related, too.

Dairy is usually the number one culprit, but it could be other allergens too. I would try to cut all dairy for one month. Watch for hidden dairy as its in a lot of stuff.

High lignan flax oil added to the diet and probiotics can help as well.

Hi AKA-can you believe our boys are almost 2???

My DD is 5 and we've been battling this since she was a babe. We've been to allergists, naturopaths, chiros, tried cranio sacral, GPs and dermatologists. First thing to do is figure out if there is a family history of atopic eczema (which is often seen in conjunction with asthma and seasonal allergies): diet might not be a factor. You can also try an elimination diet: dairy is usually the main thing.

The good news is that 50% of kids outgrow it by 3ish (unfortunately, not my DDs case).

Some things that can help:
-oatmeal baths
-limiting baths to 20 minutes or less; having coolish baths: pat dry and apply a barrier to the skin (i usually stick to olive oil, but coconut, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil and evening primrose oil can help too)
-applying a barrier cream several times a day.
-our derm was telling us about bleach baths...sounds crazy, but apparently it can work (I haven't tried it)!
-adding fats to the diet-fish oil, flaxseed, avocado...
-probiotics
-only wear 100% cotton; use Tide Free, cheer Free, Ivory snow (try an extra rinse in the wash)

Our derm. gave us this list of products, though I haven't tried them yet:
-Cetaphil lotion, cliniderm mousturizer, lipikar baume to moisturize
-cliniderm shampoo and conditioner, dove for sensitive skin bar soap
-prevex, crtaphil barrier cream for hands

With eczema, you have to manage the itch, the infection, the dryness and the eczema...it is not fun!!! If you can prevent the itch, you can prevent a lot of the fallout from eczema too (it is a nasty cycle!). Good luck-and if you find anything else, let us know!

the only thing that's worked on my dd is ShiKai Borage Dry Skin Therapy for children. otherwise, i've heard that 'pickle juice works but we never tried it. here's the link on that:

i know this artical talks about asthma, but from what i hear, it works for eczema the same way.

I've had eczema since I was born, and this lotion is hands down the best ever!!!!!!!!!! They didn't have it when I was a kid but I've used it for many years as an adult and it is really nice and doesn't sting even when my eczema was bad.

And I say WAS because since I've introduced regular intake of borage oil into my diet, I don't get any flares any more!!!! My skin is clear and smooth. No more itching, no more sores, etc. I just take a little bit of the oil every day and although I might get a flareup if I stop taking it for a few months, right now I haven't taken it in at least 3 months and my skin is still good. I started taking it about 7 years ago and as long as I remember to take it at least 4-5 times a week, my skin is great.

-Eliminating anything that can be connected makes a HUGE improvement, but sometimes there isn't something OR it's an enviormental allergen that can't be avoided (for ds1 that is is juniper pollen, we live where junipers are in everyones yard, all the parks, etc.) If that is the case, wear long sleeves and pants as much as possible.

-Oatmeal baths. Just grind up the oats in your food processor and dump straight in to the bath. Pat the skin dry as to not irratate it.

-Multiple baths a day. For some people, bathing less often works best, but for my kids, bathing 2-3 times a day made a hug improvement.

Alexander's eczema pretty much went away when we got rid of all the corn in his diet.

Aveeno Advanced Care lotion (not "natural" I know) made a big difference too.

I have eczema on my hands. The dog got sprayed by a skunk and I washed him full-strength hydrogen peroxide (and other stuff) mix. Made my hands itch and tingle a little for a moment. But my hands cleared right up, it was wonderful! Apparently peroxide is effective on eczema.

I wouldn't dunk the toddler in a peroxide bath but I might liberally sponge it on the affected areas.
