For the past week I've been losing clumps of hair and then today... for NO REASON... my pinky toenail fell off. Just... plonk.

I'm used to losing hair during prgnancy, and combining that with breastfeeding, I knew it'd be worse... but my TOENAILS????

I take 2 prenatals (one for DD who's b/f and one for DF) and 2 red raspberry leaf caplets every day.. am i not eating enough good stuff? Do I need more/better vitamins?

I'm definitely oging to talk to the OB out this but I dont have my first visit till Aug 13

((Forgive my typing, DD is asleep on my chest and has my arm pinned down))

I can't help you, but I hope you figure out what's going on soon. s

I have no idea why you'd be experiencing this - maybe put in a call to your healthcare provider... someone may be able to give you an explanation over the phone.

Ever since I found out I was pregnant, my hair has been falling out as well! At first I just thought it was my imagination but it's continued and now I dread washing and combing it . Isn't yourhair supposed to NOT fall out? With DS I remember it not falling out at all. I recently weaned DS and someone suggested that may be the issue, but I don't know...My next appt is 8/12 and I'm going to ask about it then if it hasn't all fallen out by then lol. Good luck and please post if you get any answers!

I am a midwife, but I'm not your midwife...that said, I cannot think of anything pregnancy related to toenails falling off.
I'd suspect it's a coincidence.

Sometimes clumps of hair are the pregnancy related hair growth coming in - it's pushing out the old hairs as the new hairs grow. That type of loss is really short lived - a few weeks at most.
You can't go wrong by eating healthy foods, but I wouldn't think you'd be malnurished enough to cause hair loss with just one nursling and one pea-sized (and growing!) embryo, unless you've got other stuff going on.

Different due date club, but just wanted to mention...my oldest is 14, definetly not pg, and her pinky toenail fell off about 2 months ago. And when my sister was like 17, her pinky toenails on both feet fell off, and never grew back. She started just painting right on her toes to make it look like a toenail was there. All she had though was just tougher skin. I have never heard an explaination, but I know it seems to be something that just happens sometimes.

Freaky! thanks for the thoughts!

In regards to malnutrition - I had gastric bypass in 2006 so pregnancy is always hard for me - getting enough to stay digested for me and the bean - adding my nursling to that and I'm eating almost every hour.

I told my mother about it and she SWEARS I told her I dropped something on my foot a couple days ago but I have no recollection - senility for her or preggo brain for me? We'll never know... LOL (I'm very clumsy while pregnant so she's likely right)

My toenails fell off all the time when I was a teenager. Sometimes it was related to injury, but sometimes, it wasn't. I was a vegetarian at the time, but I'm not really sure if that was behind the mysterious loss of toenails.

Just in case you didn't drop something on your foot... hair loss and toenail loss can be caused by thyroid disease. Have you been having a lot of morning sickness? This can indicate high levels of HcG, leading to transient hyperthyroidism (which means, it should clear up).

That's a real bummer. I lost my big toenail once (injury) I wasn't too happy.
