Anyone use temporary health insurance during extended maternity leave?

My family uses benefits through my employer, and my employer will not cover health insurance after my first 6 weeks or so of maternity leave (I'm not eligible for FMLA), but I am going to take a longer (unpaid) leave. It is probably going to end up being about 3 months of coverage that we'll need. To continue coverage through my employer during unpaid leave, we would pay around $1500/month!
I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and what you did for health insurance coverage for your family. Did you risk it and go without, or get emergency-only coverage?

I work for an insurance agent and temporary insurance would fit your needs. It is really for emergencies only, as the deductibles are very high and it does not cover pre-existing conditions or Rx. But it is cheap cheap cheap and almost always a better option than CHIPs or something similar (except if someone has an ongoing health problem and sees a doctor frequently for treatment or testing).

Going without is really not a good idea because if you are hospitalized for any reason, bills will rack up in no time and could put you in debt for years.
