Correcting credit score

DH and I have always had great credit but in the past 6 months that suddenly changed. One of things that showed up is a payment that supposedly went to collections. However, we have no idea what it is and there is absolutely no identifying info or contact info listed for that item. Does anyone have experience with that type of thing? If a company is reporting you, don't they have to provide at least the name of the company? How do we fight something that has no ID? Can we just write to the credit bureaus and say that we have no idea what that collection is about and request it be removed unless contact information can be provided to us? Would that work? We are trying to refinance our house and this is making our banker uncomfortable and is affecting our rate.

Yes file a dispute directly with the credit reporting agency, they will then follow up with the company to validate the debt. The process could take up to 30 days. G'luck!

Best advice is to visit the forums at creditboards. Love that site. But yes, dispute the item send a leter certified mail with return reciept to the company reporting you owe them, then send certified mail return reciept requested to the 3 bureaus...it will likely get deleted.

Just remember, the only real, accurate scores are the ones purchased from fair isaac. www.myfico.com anything else is not what everyone else sees, and therefore not accurate

That is the problem, there is no company name or any other identifying information. This was told to me by the banker processing our loan app.

Thank you, good to know about how long it will take.

you need to go to annualcreditreport and get a copy of yours, their has to be identifying information or they cant report. They legally have to report the company name, address, and phone and the info has to be correct per the FCRA.

You are entitled to one free credit report from each bureau every year. You get them from the annual credit report site.

Also it is not a good idea to contact the credit reporting agency first, you always contact them LAST.

Visit the forums at credit boards, they have all the info you need. Good luck
