Yes, extremely. If you poke around Breastfeeding Past Infancy, you'll see that many 2 year olds are still getting the brunt of their nutrition from breastmilk and are thriving.

Any chance you can switch to a better ped?

My 17 month old son would say your doctor has lost his mind! No way would he cut down to only three times a day even now - let alone at 10 months old!

He's insane. That's if you want him weaned by a year. Which is also insane

Terrible advice. Doctors shouldn't give nutritional advice--it's not something they know about. My 35 mth old has only just cut down to about 3x per day, depending on the kind of day he's had. But he also still nurses 2-3x per night.

my 10 month old still nurses when she wants, she eats 3 meals/day plus 2 or 3 snacks. our doctor said 'good job' and 'nurse as long as you want.' breastmilk is usually more calorie dense than table foods that they can eat right now and it's better for them. i got a new ped when our old one told me i needed to drink milk to make milk. it's amazing how ignorant some doctors are!

To which I would reply, " Do you only take a drink 3 times a day?"

I bet we can get at least 100 people here that will tell you their babies nursed on demand several times a day for AT LEAST a year. Both my babies have.

Yes, insane. My 26month old nurses more than that most days. At 10 months old she still got 99% of her nutrition though breastmilk. She didn't truly begin solids until 12 months or so.

Limiting breastfeeding is something to do if you are looking to start the weaning process. Which is not a great idea for a 10mo, IMO. And if you don't wish to wean anyhow, there's nothing wrong with nursing more frequently for a 4yo, nevermind 10mo....

I have to agree, that's insane advice!! Solids foods during the infancy period (first year of life) should be a compliment to breast feeding, not a substitute. Keep offering the breast as much as your baby would like!
Even the AAP says very clearly that solids during the first year are "supplemental" whether a baby is breastfed or formula-fed. What your doctor is advising is really poor advice.

Nurse on demand, continue offering solids as you have been, and don't worry about this! If you feel you need to revisit this with your doctor, look for the AAP guidelines on solid introduction and bring those in to him. Perhaps if he is reminded of the actual guidelines, he'll change his advice to mothers (not every mom would question his 'advice,' and look for independent information about this) -- and, if he's not receptive, it's a good sign that it might be time to look for a different doctor.

Kellymom may have links on her site directly to the AAP statement on the introduction of solids/solids during the first year.

Insane and possibly even dangerous advice. Breastmilk (or formula) should be the *primary* source of nutrition for the first year.
A lot of people who want to wean at a year start a lot earlier when they should be starting at a year and not before. So that's probably the "advice" you were given.

This reminds me of a joke I know. What do you call someone who graduates last in their medical class? A Doctor.

haha
yeah we have no weaning plans here certainly!
i knew he was nuts! my therapist recently told me the same thing. she said my life is controlled by my baby's feeding schedule and i was like uh huh did you formula feed your kids? of course she did. i certainly dont feel "controlled" by DD or "manipulated" as i keep being told.
its so hard to be a natural momma in an unnatural society!

Just another vote for 'insane'!! Though I know lots of people who do that - but as noted above their trying to wean by a year :boggle:
Not that you need another opinion, but insane. Breastmilk is the primary source of nutrition for the first year. And if my 3 year olds were told to only nurse 3X a day i'd be in for a riot!

Crazy insane. When my DD was 11 mo I went back to work and even with me away 8 hrs a day she was still nursing at least 4x per day PLUS having 8-12 oz bm from a bottle, in addition to table food. Her doctor has always been completely happy with her food/nutrition intake and her growth - mind you, her dr is also an IBCLC.
My 16 month old nurses so much more than that. She also eats 3 meals and a snack. She would have starved on 3x breastmilk a day at 10 months old.

We weren't at 3 times a day until 18-24 months but my son was never a big nurser. He's now down to 1x a day at 2.5

Thats mad my 27mth old ds feeds more than that actually he can still feed 10+ times a day if he is that way out and doesn't really eat a lot though will eat a bit of each of his 3 meals plus snacks and his thriving well.
