reaction to palm shortening? Red cheeks?

My DS is FPIES or intolerant to a tremendous list of foods. Today, I made him oatmeal raisin cookies using palm shortening, which was a new food for him. He ate 3 cookies and within I'd say 5-10 minutes, he had big red splotches on his cheeks down near his mouth. He's never had that kind of reaction before! Usually his reactions are delayed by 12-24 hours and involve a bumpy rash on his chin and reflux. This was a totally new thing for us!! He also got very sleepy looking, but I don't know if this was part of the reaction or if he was just tired as we had just come from gymnastics.

I gave him some allegra, and it did seem to help a bit.....cheeks got a lighter pink.

Ideas???

Thanks,
Valerie

Is he, by chance, intolerant to coconut or dates? Is it possible that he just can't handle ANY foods from the palm family?

hmmmm....I hadn't thought about the coconut connection. He was able to eat coconut for a while, but I pulled it recently suspecting he might have become sensative to it. Shoot! I might have royally screwed up!

It still was a strange reaction for him...definitley not typical of him at all.

splotches sound more like hives, which would be an IgE reaction. Was any other ingredient in the cookie new?

That's my fear...hives! He had some more tonight at a birthday party (icing made from the palm shortening and fructose on a safe cupcake) and later on I noticed he had 2 spots on his neck but no more blotches on his face and none anywhere else on his body. But, I know hives can move around. YIKES!! I gave him the allegra after the initial reaction this morning, so I know it's still in his system. I gave him a second dose of the allegra before he went to bed tonight too. The only other new ingredient in the cookies was that I used fructose for a sweetener. He's fine with most fruits though, so I wasn't too concerned about using it. He has had a very small amount of it before and did okay, but it wasn't a significant amount. I would assume that it probably predominantly comes from apples, which he is okay with. He can't do any of the latex family fruits for sure. I guess I should have only done one of those at a time. BAd on my part!!

Oh crap....now that I think about it, he got really upset while eating the cupcake. Started rubbing his face and eyes and crying, he had some red botches on his temple area, but once he calmed down they seemed to subside!

He's never had an IgE reaction that I know of....but I'm guessing maybe he did. Definitely going to avoid that!! I'm leaning toward the palm rather than the fructose though. Would you agree??

Fructose may very well be corn as easily as apples.

I was going to say the same thing about fructose. You could call the company and ask so you're sure. It might even be a blend of things.

Yea, right after I posted last time I did some research on the internet about fructose and realized that it could be made from corn. Which sucks because DS has previously been extremely intolerant of any form of corn. Oddly enough, he didn't get a rash or anything from the palm or fructose. Course, that was the first time he had ever had them. Often he's okay the first time and when I give it a second time he reacts horribly to it. So, we'll see what happens in a couple of days when I give it to him again.

i rubbed a little bit of palm on his arm yesterday to see if he broke out from it and it was fine...so maybe they weren't hives afterall. Will keep a close on it next time to make sure though.
