Quintessential End of Summer Activities

Hi Ladies- looking for ideas! I am keeping my son home for the month of August before he starts kindergarten and I want to fill our weeks with "classic" summer activities. I am a bit nostalgic over the "dog days of summer" and August was always the time when as kids, we got a bit crazy to squeeze as much summer into the final days.

I am looking for everyone's ideas on how to reap the most out of these final days! And maybe what in your family is your Classic August memories.

For me, we had a pool in our backyard so we would swim at night, and eat watermelon in our nightgowns.

Thanks for sharing!

We did a lot of swimming at night (where I live now, we get snakes in our pool sometimes. You couldn't PAY me to swim at night) or dragging our sleeping bags outside at night to look at the stars.

I think you have to make lemonade, make kites, have a picnic, blow bubbles, play in the sprinklers, make fruit juice popcicles in Dixie cups, eat popcorn and watch movies with the lights off in the daytime, and visit a beach if you can get to one.

I remember walking into town at night for ice cream. My mom would tell us stories about the stars along the way.

Hike in the woods and enjoy the greenery before it changes colors

Eat breakfast outside

Run around the yard at night playing tag with flashlights and a buddyke

Take a big sheet outside and paint together

Have a great time!

-Run through the sprinkler
-Make real lemonade and have a lemonade stand
-Make juice popsicles, eat them outside
-I'd love for the kids to have a swingset or hammock swing, to just enjoy relaxing outside - I loved the swing and hammock in the backyard as a kid

Camping! There's nothing like sitting out at night roasting marshmallows over a fire to bring back summer for me.

Running through the sprinkler.

Going berry picking.

Go swimming outdoors (beach is best, but a pool will do).

Catch bugs

Stay up late during August and watch the meteor showers

My childhood favorites-

Camping out in the backyard.

Spending the whole day at the beach or picnicking at the beach in the late afternoon and staying until everyone else leaves and it gets dark and quiet except for the sound of the waves.

Playing hide-n-seek with my parents.

Bike riding to the store for a Popsicle.

Building forts and playing endless boardgames with my brothers.

Wearing jammies and eating homemade popcorn at the drive-in movies.

Lying in the grass and watching clouds and ants and not having to go anywhere.
