Welcome, Melanie. :)  We're doing a small lunch party with cake for Griffin's birthday.  Just a small gathering of family and we requested no gifts...I hope they honor that request.

I don't read LWAB...I just get the subscription for this thread.  So if we collectively move somebody post it in here so I know to come, too.

And, total bummer, I miscarried this week.  I'm sad for a variety of reasons, but it is for the best since G needs more "I'm the baby!" time.  I do look forward to hearing who is going to be the next mama, though!!

Rowan will be a year at the end of the month, and this has been the most awesome experience of my life, having a baby. He rocks my world, y'all. He is so smart now, has started to walk, says a few words and ask me what the names for things are (by pointing at something and saying, "eh?"! I repeat it over and over for him, and I can tell those little wheels are turning!

For our first birthday, we are doing a combo birthday party with Rowan's best friend Esme, who is a week younger than he is (we met his moms in our birthing class!). Our theme is Hot Air Balloons. Rowan LOVES balloons, so I think it will be a hit.

We are still getting used to the idea that we have a 1 year old. He is currently sick with a little cold and is very mama dependant. Thankfully he finally popped through the upper teeth. He was working on all incisors at once and interestingly the ones that came in first were not the center ones. So now we have 6 sort of teeth!

Angela, I'm so sorry to hear your news. 

We're not sure what we're doing for Malachi's first birthday. I had a great idea for a simple theme last summer, but now I can't think of it to save my life! It will be something small, though. It's hard because I think people expect us to have a big party and I'm just wanting something very simple. It might sound mean but I just don't want chaos and lots of kids running around. But some friends have already communicated their expectation to be invited. We just have a small place. DH wants to get DS a guitar because DS is so into his guitar. He thinks he can find one for a toddler somewhere. I wanted to get him a wooden rocking horse, but will probably go with the guitar, as DH rarely has preferences.

I'm trying to find a wheat free cake recipe. have others had luck with this, and if so, will you share?

Today is Emily's birthday.  We are just having dinner with the four of us, but I made a cake and we have decorated with balloons and party hats and will have a nice dinner with cake and ice cream for dessert.  Lucky Emily, January 10th is a holiday in Colombia, so I got the day off work to spend with my girl.  I wish Benjamin's birthday was a holiday, too. That would be so cool.

Nothing fancy, just us.  But we live very far from extended family.  No doubt if we were in the states we'd have a larger gathering for her.

Awww Happy Birthday Emily! Her cake is so cute and yay for being able to stay home with her.

I have been searching the forums for good vegan cake options.  There are a ton of threads with a ton of recipes under the health section.  I thought the couscous cake here is pretty cool.  I am still flip flopping about whether to do a muffin or cake for Malachi.  I do know that the "icing" for him will probably be smashed up bananas with either blueberries or sweet potatoes pureed and mixed in. It should be very messy and fun.  As far as a recipe that is wheat free, I just read on some thread that you can grind up quinoa in a coffee grinder or food mill for flour which seems pretty cool.

We have family coming in on Thursday.  We will have- aunt, uncle, two cousins (26 mo and 6.5mo), grandma and grandpa all in a one bedroom apartment for the whole weekend.  I am looking forward to the chaos and fun family time. DH is a little apprehensive of the smoothness of nap times and happy kids but I can't wait!

I clearly went the neon coloring route for the birthday cake, but it was fun and most of it went on her hair, the floor and everywhere BUT her mouth, and I figure, what the hey, birthdays are but once a year.

That being said the Joy of cooking has an excellent and very simple dairy and egg free chocolate cake recipe that is easily adaptable for other flavor combos, vanilla, spice, carrot...just substitute the cocoa powder for extra flour, or spices. 

I am sure it could be adapted to use other flour types if gluten issues are a concern.

It uses ice water and vinegar with baking soda as a leavener, so it should hold up to other flours.

If I were not to do the 3D cake thing I would probably do a polenta cake.  They are yummy and simple.

We had our first of two cake smashes this morning (new photographer in the family wanted something under his belt and a friend is doing one in two weeks).  Check out my boy. :)

He went from 0-60 in no time flat.  LOVED the whole cake and sucking it down and then *bam* D.O.N.E. and was in tears because he wanted to be clean and now!

Hi Mamas, I don't know if you remember me. I joined the due date club late and was an occasional poster. Olivia will be one on January 30th. Unbelievable. This year seemed to have flown by. I was looking at all my pictures last night and can't believe how big my baby has become. We won't do a big birthday party but will have a fun celebration with the family. I was wondering how your babies do with eating... I have been reading all the threads about solids and it seems that a lot of younger babies are eating a lot more solids than Olivia. She was late to begin with and not interested in food for a long time. I tried BLW and spoon feeding. Anyways she still does not replace one meal with solids and I am basically nursing her completely. She will maybe eat 4-5 good spoons pureed veggies or fruit. Just last week I gave her small pieces of very soft avocado and she did not like that and pushed it out. Though she eats a bit avocado when I blend it which makes me wonder if she is ready at all cause that is what they always say that babies wouldn't be ready if they still have the tongue thrust.  

I guess I am wondering if there is any other baby out there who is still completely nursing???

Hi Mawood!  Welcome back :)

You are not alone.  Although I am no longer breastfeeding, our LO refuses to eat real food.  If we try to force it a bit, he has a serious gag reflex and vomits.  He will not eat solid food, but he'll eat stage 2 baby food so we're having to make do with formula and baby food. 

I've talked to our Ped about it and they told us not to worry until they are over a year, but I mean, come on, it's only a few weeks away for us, and I don't see anything changing any time soon.  I'm going to be contacting the birth to 3 folks to see what they have for resources, and I'm also going to push it with our Ped to get a referral to a feeding program at a nearby hospital.

In the meantime, we're following the Ped's advice to offer food all the time and let him explore and be messy.  He has alot of fun with the food, playing with it, but not once has he been interested in putting it in his mouth.  I've even put food on his tray and eaten off it with my fingers to show him how it's done, and he smiles and thinks it's great fun for mommy to be doing that, but I guess it doesn't occur to him that he should do it too.
