Italy vacation with a 16mo?

Seriously, mamas, is it going to be fun, or will it be a stressful disaster? We'd fly from the U.S. and hopefully stay somewhere for 1-2 weeks, possibly in a rental apartment. We're also thinking of bringing my mother with us. We're planning to work on learning to nurse in the Ergo, and hopefully get my DD to accept naps in her stroller before the trip. (She's pretty high needs

DH's favorite city in the world is Rome, and this trip is for his 40th birthday, and would be in October.

Thoughts and advice are very appreciated.

Well, traveling with kids is lways a bit stressful - but Italy is very child friendly!
We stayed in Trento for 3 months with 4 kids. Granted, Trento is a small town - not at all like Rome - but we had a small apartment, we were close to parks, could walk into town. We just took it easy basically.
If you have an apartment where you can relax, cook, take naps etc then it is easy enough to go out exploring in the morning, come back for lunch and a rest, then head out again in the afternoon or evening.
Two weeks in Rome sounds wonderful! Have a great time!

What do you think about strollers in Rome? My husband wants to bring our BOB. Way too big?

we travelled to italy at about the same age with our son. rome was great, but hot, so if y9ou have an apt to come to periodically it's great to just relax and cool down. rome is mostly stroller friendly. florence is great...we stayed in a hotel right on the touristy street which was great for us. the only place we found was totally stroller UNfriendly was venice. with canals abns bridges every 10 feet, picking up the stroller mostly wioth the baby in it, was a pain. also having to be constantly attentive to the baby near the water was tiring.. all in all though it was fun. enjoy your trip!

I also wanted to ask if anyone knows of good places to rent apartments for short term rentals, like a week or two? Wouldn't a hotel room be a bad idea?

Beauchamp, you could check out some of the apartment reviews on the Slow Travel website. Here's the link to their Italy section, the vacation rentals link includes reviews and classifieds.

I agree that Italy is pretty child-friendly, but want to add that it's manifest mostly in attitude rather than practicalities. Italians are very patient and tolerant with kids out in public, which is fabulous, but it can be really hard to find places to change diapers, or decent public bathrooms in general. Public parks that are clean and not run down are also rare. (This is truer Rome and further south.) Some areas of Rome can be hard to navigate with strollers because people often park on sidewalks or over curb cuts. You don't mention whether you want to travel much outside Rome, but some towns can be really tough with a stroller- a pp mentioned Venice, and many hill towns have areas that are accessible only by stairs.

It shouldn't be very hot in Rome in October. It can get warm but I doubt you'll experience temps higher than the low 80sF/26-29C. It's already that 'cool' in Rome and it's only the end of August. So you shouldn't be uncomfortable with your dd in the Ergo. (I was rarely able to wear my dd in the summertime because of how hot it gets here. I live a couple of hours south of Rome.)

You mention that Rome is your dh's favorite city, in that case he's probably already been to see the church of San Clemente. But if not, I really recommend it, it's one of my favorite places in Rome. If you go, put your dd in the Ergo that day, as you'll need to descend the stairs to arrive first at the level of the early Christian church, then again for the Roman temple and insula.

Have fun!
