Letting a dog sleep with kids

We have a 5mo chihuahua. He's 5lbs. He wrestles with our 100lb lab and is a pretty tough little guy - definitely not a delicate pup.

Anyway, he desperately wants to sleep with the kids. Anytime I go upstairs to go to bed, he immediately runs and gets in bed with them (their mattress is on the floor).

I haven't let him yet because he loves to burrow under the covers and I worry that they'll roll over on him.

So, what do you think? Would you let him sleep with the kids? He's sleeping with me right now but, they really want him with them.

is there a way to compromise for a while? maybe he can sleep in a basket in their room? tell them it's like a co-sleeper for when there is an infant and he can be on their beds when he gets a little bigger?
