Asking for my Dad - excessive canker sores in mouth

My poor Dad has been suffering with this for a while and no doctors have been able to help him. I was wondering if you knowledgeable mamas might have some more info for him.

My Dad gets horrible break outs of canker sores in his mouth. They cover the inside of his cheeks, under his tongue, down his throat. He gets 20-30 of them at a time and he can't eat at all until they go away because they are so painful.

He knows that nuts of any kind seem to cause breakouts, and he also avoids avocado and all Chinese food (probably the sesame oil). He noticed that using a whitening toothpaste for sensitive teeth (like Rembrandt) seems to help heal them.

Any ideas what could be the cause or the specific allergy? I have to say that his diet overall is pretty poor and he is on medications for high blood pressure and cholesterol. He also has acid reflux.

TIA. I just wish I could help him more . Unfortunately, my research hasn't turned up much and he won't really research himself.

My sister had this issue and it turned out it was related to citrus. So, she doesn't eat any citrus anymore, and has to be very careful to check ingredients lists for foods and cosmetics/soaps/lotions, because they now give her sores on her skin.

DD was zinc deficient. A combo of supplemental zinc and homeopathic natrum muriaticum reduced the frequency of canker sores, cleared them up more quickly, and eventually she stopped getting them altogether.

The zinc was important (I'd say vital), but I'd started it before the nat mur and it took the homeopathic (when she started to feel canker sores coming on) to slow down and then stop them altogether.

Hope he finds something that works, they are so painful, even just a few.

Does he take L-Lysine? That's supposed to help.
