We have not legally appointed the above aunt as guardian, but i did ask her and she is the beneficiary of our life insurance policies.

Would you all choose a single person? ....
Good idea to reevaluate every few years or so! For sure. I probably would not tell anybody who is beneficiary of life insurance policies.

Yes, I would choose a single person. It just depends on who that single person is.

What about standby guardian?

In the state I am in, it is a good idea to have a standby guardian. This is not a secondary or backup guardian... but rather someone who is guardian for the intermittent time it takes the courts to 'appoint' the new guardian. This could be, I'm guessing, 90 days or so. If you don't have a standby guardian your DC would likely go to foster care during this time.

We did rule out any relatives who are known to use hellfire as a threat. But really, those people would have been off the list for other, non-dogma-related reasons anyhow.

It took us a few years to get over the notion that we could find a "perfect" replacement for us, i.e. a friend or relative who would make exactly the sames choices we'd make for the next 18 years. Ain't gonna happen. So love and household stability are the criteria we have employed.

lol!!! looks like we agree on this thread, smithie!!!

a silly question? do people often appoint a back up gaurdian? My parents live quite near us, so we often share rides. This thread has got me worried!

I have notarized letters in the house explaining to the police or social workers which neighbors can be left in charge of my children until their guardian arrives on the scene.

I do name a second set of guardians in my will in case the first set has suffered some calamity themselves and feels unable to parent my children at the time of my death.
