Oh, geo. Ugh.

My XH did that once when renting a house from my mom. He started the bathtub, then fell asleep. It was hours, until anyone noticed.

That might be worse.

I'm gonna be so sore tomorrow...

Oh, ugh, Geo! We had a flood in our carpeted lower level (raised ranch). Thankfully, the water hadn't come from above, but from a big rainstorm and a double sump pump failure. It was a nightmare getting it fixed. I'm sorry.

Kerc - I'm thinking of you.

Gaye - I seem to remember having a similar doubt on a 4 mile recovery run when tapering for my marathon. This is what taper is all about. You'll do great on the weekend! Promise!

Jo - I love hearing about your farm, food and feeding yourself and your family from the foods you have personally raised or grown. I know you bust your butt and put in so many long hours, but it just seems like such a labor of love, and the rewards are not only nourishing your body, but your soul.

So we had haircuts this evening. The big girls needed some pretty significant trims, after a summer of swimming. Katie got a couple of inches off, but Emily decided she wanted a big change and went for an above the shoulder bob! It is adorable, but part of me is still mourning my long, crazy haired girl. It's ok. I'll adjust. It's her hair and she was really wanting to do this.

RR: I started Week 2 of the Couch to 5k! And it felt GREAT!!!! Even though it was hot, humid, and the track smelled like pee (Not even going to BEGIN thinking about the reasons for THAT!), it felt really good. Not a peep from my leg, and I was averaging around a 9:30 minute pace on the run sections as a good, natural pace for me. I guess all that swimming and bike riding have been good for me after all!

Bec, that's excellent!

Geo, I'm sorry. Water always makes me feel kind of panicked. I'm really, really invested in my sump pump (not that one would have helped in your situation.)

Gaye, you'll be fine. You've got to have one crappy run before the race, just to get it all out of your system.

I got my kids' on-sale snowboots in the mail yesterday. Nothing like warm boots in August! But I'm pleased to have gotten them out of the way. We paid $45 for ds's boots one year and it has haunted me ever since.

Still no running. My hip is very achy. I'm thinking I'll do a bit on the treadmill, and avoid the heat and humidity, and have an easy out if the pain persists. I lost my yoga dvd somewhere so I need to hunt that up and start stretching again.

Penelope - Us to (except it was $50). The problem that my children seem to have is unpredictable growth spurts. They tend to grow anywhere from 1-3 shoe sizes during prime boot buying season (which is to say, August and September). It's so hard to predict what their shoe size is going to be when they will actually NEED the boots! We have had boots go an entire season not being worn because I guessed wrong!

Total aside - Some of the smilies changed positions, and I just want it out there that I notice stuff like that!

to kerc. Hope you're feeling peaceful.

bec, thanks. I do love it. It's only really overwhelming sometimes, and it's a work/life balance problem. In theory, I had resolved this when I went back as a part-timer, but then circumstances changed and the office needed help. I guess I considered the needs of my employer and figured we (family) can flex in the short-term to help them...I am going to start feeling the "payoff" soon, when the new writer starts. That's when I get to work reduced hours, working the kinds of projects I truly enjoy, and not have to worry about the client side. It's coming. October should feel like a vacation!

Geo, I think I had a panic attack just reading what happened. Ugh! Our basement has two sump pumps...but it is also an old farmhouse basement that is used only to store things, and our freezers are up on blocks just in case. Will you be replacing carpet?

Penelope, I give you credit for being organized. I still don't have school supplies. Maybe tonight after work. I also want to get my kids nice lunchboxes. I haven't gone through their clothes yet to see what's missing.

Plan is to do AM chores and take kids to the Y, then they are invited to a water party this afternoon, so I will go to work and dh will pick them up. Tomorrow will be another second-shift work day for me, but this should be a fun weekend. Out-of-town friend visiting, hoping to see Reb, and the county fair if I get lucky!

Meantime, holy mosquitos! I have blisters from the insect bites, and I take an allergy pill! It's so hot and humid you sweat off the spray as soon as you move, so they land where the sweat trickles down and rinses it off. I am able to do the minimum--pick vegetables--and even so, I have easily 30 bites on my heavily sprayed body. Blech.

One week until Ramadan starts. Caffeine reduction is progressing OK, now need to also hydrate better. Can someone tell me about chia?

Jo, the only thing I've found that really works predictably with summer fasts (we just had a big one a couple weeks ago) is hydrating for days beforehand with Powerade or Gatorade. Plain water doesn't seem to do the trick as well. for whatever that's worth.

Kerc,
Geo,

Gaye, you're going to do GREAT! You have predictable taper madness/anxiety. You're going to rock the race...have faith in all the hard work you've done!
Thanks, Nic! What was your recent big fast?

Gaye, Nic is right. I was thinking about your training and my thought was, "How can she not rock this?"
I make some cucumber and lemon water and it's delicious... yesterday I added chia to the water and wow! I was high as a kite! (chia does that to me, though).

Very refreshing.

Biking yesterday and today, if it isn't too hot I might try to run tonight.

Ok, I'm now dressed in my running clothes, yay, but ate a big bowl of oatmeal to keep dh company while he ate breakfast, although he in fact was done eating by the time my oatmeal was microwaved. <rolls eyes elaborately>

So I'm just waiting until I feel like running, and musing over this problem: why do I drop a pound or two if I skip my runs for a few days? And gain a pound or two (or more!) even during weeks when I run a lot? Do I just eat more after I run? Is it some delay in water weight adjustment? I mean, I look fine and my clothes fit, although I have the squooshy abs of a 35yo mama of two who does no ab work, but what is the deal there? </musing>

eta, 5 on the treadmill. I swear, indoors it takes me a full two miles to focus on the run... I'm like a kid at bedtime. I need a drink of water! I need to pee!

9th of Av (that's the name of the Hebrew month we're in). Anniversary of a lot of terrible tragedies in Jewish history -- destructions of both First and Second Temples, day the Spanish set for the deadline of the Expulsion in 1492, etc.

Penelope, that happens to me with dh all the time (I wait for him to eat, and he finishes and lopes off to do something else while i"m still sitting there...eating. )

FM: quick 3 miles this morning; I woke up late and dh had to go in early. Now we're having to schedule the early a.m. runs (not just the weekend ones) whereas until now, I have basically had every weekday early morning for myself to go out and run. Not sure I want to share, esp. because I don't see how I'll be able to get them in later in the day since I'll be working more or less full time and have the kids with me when I come home. Gah.
Thanks, guys. This is, I'm sure, taper madness-ish, but also partly because I look at all the training that others put in for these races, and I'm nowhere near that level. I know that I put in enough to get it done, and I just need to keep reminding myself that. I'm not going to podium, so don't stress about it, just finish!

Did I mention that there's a definite possibility that I'll have clinical the weekend of the marathon?

Track is done. I am tired. XH is supposed to pick up DS at some point today, so maybe I'll get a nap in. I really need to start working on cleaning out the garage/setting baby stuff aside to craigslist, though. Oh, and I have a dentist appt and my gums have been randomly bleeding and sore for the past week, so I'm sure that will be fun.

rr~6 x 200 (plus warm-up and cool-down). I pre-race workouts.

Ok, so I just called the first of the nanny's references and she was good. Do I bother calling the others? They were coworkers rather than supervisors, if it makes a difference. And we've established before that I hate making phone calls, right?

Call all the references. Ask the coworkers if there are other people they would recommend you call.

I've had BAD sitters.

Call.
Yeah, that's what I thought, I just didn't want to.

I called, had to leave messages for both of them, but I called. Here's hoping they call back relatively promptly...
Call. If you don't hear back, call again. Get this sitter hired. But yeah, call.

Jo ~ How are you surviving the humidity? Do you have air? It's been hot during the day, but at night it hasn't been too bad in my house. Thinking beach day today.

Chia ~ we eat it as cereal with fruit or stick a little bit in our water. Great for energy!!! If I was going to see you soon, I'd give you some. I have a 2lb bag here.

No run yesterday. I don't know if it was the heat or what but I felt really weird all day. Like STARVING and NO ENERGY. I finally got a big sandwich, drink, and a little candy from the co-op in Marquette and felt better but then I was so stuffed I didn't feel like running.

I've been in my running clothes since this AM. I can't sleep in them, can I?
You can totally sleep in your running clothes, JenLove! I know I have. We're surviving by working out at the Y. Last night I slept in the living rm. It's been cloudier today, so not too awful. It's pretty nice in the barn. It's the mosquitoes I can't handle. Blech. I can get chia at Woodman's, so I think I might go for it and add it to my early-early-AM pre-dawn meal. If I weren't going into the office, I would hit a beach for certain.

Gaye, if you have to hire her before finalizing the reference-contacts, do it, but let her know the hire is contingent. I hope she's great.

4.25 evil, wheezy miles on the TM. Yuck. And now, tomato sandwiches.

One of them called back, and she gave a glowing recommendation with lots of relevant info. So, based on that, I will offer the job. If the other one calls back, great. If not, I'm not going to worry about it.

I'm kind of bummed. Lance Armstrong was in town to announce a new professional cycling event in Colorado (ala the Tour of California) and had tweeted to come down and bring your bike for a ride after. He led 4000 cyclists (with police escort) from the state capital down to Wash Park for a few loops and back. I have two friends who were there and said it was amazing. I wanted to go soooo bad, and I would have taken DS in the Chariot, but I had a dentist appointment. So, instead of riding in an amazing group ride with LA, I got to sit in a chair and get my teeth scraped.

We are tired, so we are going to () take a nap this afternoon!
bummer Gaye. At least you still have your beautiful smile.

The heat here is overwhelming. I got out of the van to walk Helen into her piano lessons and got all woozy on the blacktop. The temperature readings have been between 100 and 104 all afternoon. The humidity is right there with it. Dh is making me as I had to convince him to cancel soccer practice. The state highschool athletic assoc has regulations about these things and his AD is apparently still on summer break so the season is starting in fits and spurts and I am providing all sorts of helpful info but not the key to the equipment shed.

I am so excited for dingo camping. Not that I am camping but I will be there sometime on Saturday to visit and take photos.

Dh and ds1 are gone until Sunday. He returns with his brother and his parents will be here before they are. I've got some work to do around here and some wouldn't hurt. I also forgot to make arrangements for a running while they are gone. I'm off to figure it out.
