Food Allergy?

I'm at a loss...

my 20 month old has had very loose, very stinky stools for the past 3 days or so. And she's going 3-4 times a day, she is usually a twice a day pooper.

She does have a sensitivity to cow's milk protein (but is fine with cheese and yogurt). She drinks goat's milk instead. Anyway, early in July we decided to try cow's milk again, since it had been about 7 months since the last time. The frequency of the poop didn't change, but it started to becoming softer, and she had a mild excema flare up, so two weeks ago, we stopped it. And things *seemed* to go back to normal.

But for the last two weekends, we have had runny poop...a day or two after eating kiwi. It's the ONLY thing I can think of that has changed in her diet (except for the milk). She had kiwi on Friday and devoured it, and on Saturday she had one normal poop, followed by several much softer poops and yesterday and today seemed to have obvious diarrhea.

But she's not in any discomfort and is in a good mood, so I don't think she has some kind of virus or anything.

Could it be the kiwi or is it leftover from the milk?

I wouldn't write off some sort of virus. My 5-year-old has been complaining of the same thing basically and she's a-okay in every other day.

Or it could be the milk or kiwi.

Any type of inflammatory reaction in the GI tract (such as the milk reaction) may take time for the IgA and mucous to recover. In the interim the lining may be more sensitive to infection and reactions(whether allergic or intolerance).

Agreeing with the pp who said it COULD be coincidentally a virus.

But... if she's sensitive to casein (milk protein) then:

1) she may have a "threshold" of casein that she can tolerate and you're seeing changes in the levels of it in her body.

2) a gastro told us that 80-85% of children that react to casein also react to soy. So if you are giving her things that have soy in it when the milk is absent... or IN ADDITION to the milk... the combo could be more than her body can tolerate.

Hope she's better by now... this thread is older.
