Mumps Outbreak - what do I need to know?

We are having a confirmed mumps outbreak here, with it possibly being a new strain of mumps that is not in the vaccine. There has been 10 cases in the last few weeks, all at the local city jail. They vaccinated with MMR 600 inmates and employees.

What do I need to know? My daughter is 100% non-vaxed. We are often out and about town on public transit, and live in the high crime area so I expect for at least some people to be released from the jail into the neighborhood.

DD honestly is healthy as can be - I"m more worried about me with a weakened immune system catching it.

If you want some info on Mumps I'd check out the Mumps Pink book section on the CDC website. I find it comforting to read how rare complications are.

I was vaccinated for mumps and had it, on both sides, in elementary school. My mother was a pretty standard 1970s housewife, so she didn't do anything extra...no supplements, no vitamin A or C, no homeopathy, no mineral rich soups, nothing. She just kept me home from school, fed me copious amounts of ice cream, but I recovered fine anyway.

Since this appears to be about catching/treating mumps and not vaccination, I'm moving it over to Health and Healing for more responses.

we used homeopathy, with a few nutrients....it was easy as pie!
