UTI's in 3 month old

Thread Starter
I'm looking for advice for my 3 month old who has had 2 UTI's in 3 weeks (I think the 2nd time around was because the antibiotics never really killed the infection). She has a VCUG scheduled for the middle of the month and if there is an abnormalties they will keep her on a daily low dose antibiotic until she outgrows it by toddlerhood.

I don't want to go that route. I'm seeking advice from a naturopathic doctor but in the meantime I wanted to get some feedback from any moms that have gone through this with a baby.

THank you!

Low dose ABX for UTI prevention is debateable. Some Urologist are for it, some against it. All of my daughters Ped Uro's are NOT for it and haven't even suggested it.

First I would do the VCUG to make sure everything is working like it should. Then go from there. You can always refuse the low dose ABX.

Good luck! Let us know how the test results go.

KatWrangler is right that many urologists disagree about abx. Our daughter's urologist insisted we do the abx, because she had high grade reflux as well as some other complications, so shewas on them from 6 wks old until she was about 2. She actually had a lot of trouble with the abx and we fought until we finally got her off of them last year. She's done really well since then.

There are some parents who choose not to do abx and instead take their child in for a urine test every month. You might try talking to your uro about what your options are. Good luck with the VCUG!

From our experience my opinion is that UTI symptoms flare up when bacteria in the gut are out of balance and pathenogenic bacteria are getting the upper hand. This causes the immune system to have trouble keeping them at bay in the urinary tract as well. Taking abx will in the long term make it harder to heal because what you need to do is recolonize the GI tract. I would introduce probiotics/probiotic foods, and gradually increase them, try to decrease sugary/carby foods, and try cranberry pills. My HCP likes cranberry D-mannose pills because they cause a slippery lining to be developed in the urinary tract which makes it hard for bacteria to hold onto. Any immune support is going to help (b12, iodine, d3, vit c) as well as tons and tons of water.

Here is an article that looks very interesting:
Prevention and treatment of urinary tract infection with probiotics, Indian Journal of Urology
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2684288/

The abstract explains the phenomenon I am trying to describe above.
