does your 8 yo. have trouble with irregular verbs?

My 8 yo. still can't quite grasp a lot of irregular verbs. He'll say "selled" instead of "sold," and "weared" instead of "wore," for example.

Is this way out of the age range for what is normal? And if so, what can I do about it? I always repeat the sentence nonchalantly, with the correct verb.

Him: "I weared my favorite shirt."

Me: "Yes, I see you wore your favorite shirt. I really like that shirt."

Should I be doing more?

Once in a while my ds does that. I think he has it down for the most part but I remember blinking at something he said a few times recently. I don't even correct him. He gets very annoyed when I repeat what he said but in a slightly different way. He knows it's a correction and it derails him from what he is trying to tell me. He's figured out all aspects of language without instruction so I know it isn't necessary for him in his environment of people who use proper grammar. YMMV.

My son will be 8 in less than 2 months and he still has issues with irregular verbs. The main one that gets me is he always says "brang" instead of "brought", though he does use others incorrectly as well. I have been correcting him for the most part lately, but it tends to make him annoyed/angry with me. I did ask a professor of Speech Pathology who does research on children's speech development about this a couple years ago (I ate lunch with her at a business function) and I believe she said most kids start to use most irregular verbs correctly around age 6 or so, and they generally learn them on their own. I've also looked at a couple reserach articles that show some 9 year olds still use some irregular verbs incorrectly. So I guess I'm not too worried yet.

My best friend's son will turn 8 in Oct. He is an exceptionally bright kid and yet still makes mistakes with irregular verbs sometimes. I have no doubt that he will sort it all out in time.

yup. i would say normal. i see a lot of dd's classmates doing it too.

i notice though its not too much. she has just a few she makes mistakes on. and sometimes she corrects her own self.

sometimes i correct her. sometimes i dont.

however i will say most of the time their words just crack me up. like pps 'brang' or bringed.

i dont worry about it at all because its all about vocabulary.

Normal, especially for the more rare irregular verbs, if they're distracted or tired.

I remember my nephew telling me "...and then I slided into 2nd base!" when he was 10. He's an articulate, intelligent college graduate now, and I don't think he's said 'slided' for a good long time.

DD will be 9 in November, and has been verbally advanced throughout her life. She will still occasionally slip with words she doesn't commonly use. I just correct her and move on. She doesn't often misuse one a second time following a correction.
