hi,

can you help me fill my netflix queue with science videos for my little boy. he'll be in first grade. we don't have cable, so i'm looking to netflix this year for some entertaining & educational videos. we don't have a science curriculum, so i thought having videos and fun books would be good for him. he likes man vs. wild, but i'd like to find other videos too. animated is completely fine & so are "characters" or whatever. i'm cool with that. thanks!

[disclaimer: we are not HSing.... yet]

My son loves the "Walking with Dinosaurs" series. There seems to be 2, one with Kenneth Brannagh, and one with Nigel Marven. He likes both, but the Nigel ones are his favorite.

I've heard the Planet Earth documentaries are excellent, but we haven't gotten to them yet.

Ok, but the ones he's learned the MOST from are the Popular Mechanics for Kids series.

Those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my mind. I know a lot of people think videos are a bad way to learn stuff because it's so passive, but my DS loves to watch them over and over again, and he really learns A LOT, wants to try stuff himself, and internalizes it and applies it elsewhere. But science is one of his favorite things.

I don't know if netflix has these, but we either rented them from our local video store, the library, or bought them used online:

Winged Migration http://www.amazon.com/Winged-Migrati...d_bxgy_d_img_b

Meerkat Manor all 4 season plus the movie. However, for little kids who can't follow the narration, this is nothing more than scene after scene of little brown rodents running around. If you can follow the narration, it's really interesting. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...112_312&fsc=14

My kids really like some of the life of mammals series (with david attenborough). You'll probably want to preview it, though, since there are some animal deaths and such. There's really cute bits about moles and things, though.
