Bowling

Do any of you have anything that says its not safe to bowl while pregnant? I did while I was preggers with a singleton, but my OB wants me to NOT bowl while pregnant with twins. I'm 17 weeks and 5 days.

um, nope, never heard of that one. Did you ask your OB his reasons? When I was seeing an OB, I would do that pretty often: ask what the reasons were and then go home and do my own research. Then I'd do what I thought was acceptable and if my opinion differed from his, I usually wouldn't bring it up again.

Indeed not, I was on a league when preggers with my DD and my doctor knew it. Just told me to rest if it got to be too much.

I would def. ask the OB why!

I'd ask why - if there is a specific reason for you not to bowl, but I saw a pregnant woman bowling and I was actually jealous because I never felt well enough to do it myself. She was probably 6 or 7 months, I think.

I should have put that I am considered high risk - 2 MC with one happening less than a year ago. I don't know if that makes a difference, but it's not really bothering me that much as I don't care to bowl anyway, but from knowing me beforehand, they knew that I was a bowler.

Thanks!

I'm a professional fitness instructor, exercised like mad through my DS pregnancy, & read the book, "Exercising through your pregnancy" by Dr. Clapp.

Exercise & physical activity of all kinds are extremely beneficial to the mother as well as the baby! With very very few exceptions.
(you probably want to avoid something where your belly could be hit hard, like raquet ball, maybe avoid things with high risk of falling & injury like horseback riding, downhill skiing & gymnastics) & obviously you can't lay flat on your belly so you need to modify your yoga & pilates routines. That's about it!
I personally even continued to do supine (flat on the back) exercises & stretches despite the ACOG recommendation against doing so past the 5th month. (I have extensive reasons for doing so - I can post my little essay if you're interested.)

I can't think of a single thing inherent in the activity of bowling that could pose any danger to pregnancy whatsoever.
I'm curious to hear the OBs reply to the Q!!

I completely agree! My ob even told me that a woman who is physically active during her pregnancy has fewer complications and tends to bear the delivery better than a woman who "sits in a rocker" during the pregnancy. I am really curious as to the reasoning!

I took 17 preschoolers bowling at 7 months last time. I'm pretty sure your are fine. But ask - it may just be that he's worried about you lifting heavy things? We play candlein around here, so the balls are little.

I've never been told that I can't bowl, but at this point, I wouldn't. I'm 20 weeks. I went bowling with my kids and husband when I was about 12 weeks and after our two games, I did not feel good! I don't get a lot of exercise but I'm not so out of shape that I can't lift an 8lb ball - but I did feel kinda cruddy afterwards. Maybe it's because of my past c-section; this baby was conceived about two weeks shy of a year after my emergency c/s and the scar hurts sometimes. Our alley has 6# balls for kids, if it's heavy things that your OB is worried about, you could request a smaller ball.
