Midwifery in Ireland

Thread Starter
Can anyone tell me about Midwifery in Ireland? Does the country license Midwives and Nurse Midwives separately? The school of Nursing and Midwifery website isn't exactly clear on it and their contact info is pretty limited. I'm finding it hard to find info. I also see that there are some pending laws that will change a lot. Anyone know anything?
Thanks

Hi there,

We have a 4 year direct entry Midwifery degree or you can do an 18 month post grad in Midwifery if you already have a nursing degree. The new laws will affect the autonomy of the self employed midwife and make homebirth more difficult to come by. Once you have finished your degree you also have to complete an additional 3 years in a 'Midwifery' setting before you can practice as a homebirth Midwife.

Any questions - let me know!
