Honey, what percentages was she at for 5 months? If she went from say the 50th to the 10th, then that might be some cause for concern - not to panic, but just to keep an eye on it. I'm probably a small minority, but I cannot exclusively BF beyond about 6 months. At 4 months my kids slow down their gain dramatically, and if I don't start to supplement around 6 months they start losing. So I personally can't take it lightly. I even tried domperidone this time around and am still losing my milk. Now if she was always on the smaller side, and your family is made of smaller people (I'm 6' and DH is 6'3", so we are NOT small people over here) then it probably isn't as much of a concern. Like I said, I'm in the minority, but I would watch it.

Perdita & Nicole- thank you for the suggestions. Since 4 months she's been moving down the percentile, 40th @ 4 months, 25th @ 5 months, now 10th at 6 months. Her head circumference has stayed at 50th percentile since birth, and her height has followed the same downward curve as her weight.

In tend to believe that she's just going to be a tiny baby. My mom tells me I was a tiny baby, and there's plenty of short women on both mine and my husband's maternal and paternal sides. Lots of women between 5'0 and 5'4. So maybe it's just in the genes??

Also, I've never noticed signs of hunger from her, she either falls asleep on the boob, or takes herself off when she's had enough. I've been block feeding her the whole time. I always offer her the other boob and she rarely if ever wants more, sometimes at bedtime she wants more. And I still frequently get engorgement - about once a week, and I leak plenty. So I don't think it's a supply issue.

I'm waiting to hear what my pediatrician suggests. Thanks again.

Hunny- Welcome!!! That could just be a normal growth curve for her, but it does worry me that it is steadily going down. It might be a metabollic issue or something along those lines that is easy to treat. I hope your doctor has some answers for you. Does she happy?

Oh- and i got your PM, we leave on tuesday for our cruise, I will fill you in on the details afterwards if you'd like!

Welcome, Hunnylocs! I hope your pediatrician has some answers for you.

NicoleS--that's a great idea. I will definitely go in knowing what our options are if indeed she has the condition. And then I have to be prepared to make the best decision for her longterm health. It is so hard being a parent!

Katie, thanks for the chiropractor tip--I hadn't even though of that.

And Aramat, that does make me feel better. I hope that's the case when we visit the specialist.

I let dd lick my plum the other day, and she made a terrible face! I want to try to hold off on solids until 7mo. She thinks she's ready, but I'm not! I hope I am not being selfish. She sits up pretty well, and is working on her grasp. Nicole730, I feel the same way--but I'm not sure there is anything in our garden appropriate for her first food. I was thinking we would start with pears, since they will probably be in season by then. I have yet to do my reading on blw. Anyone know any reason not to start with mushy pears?

She sounds exactly like my DD. Which doesn't mean you shouldn't get it checked out - but don't panic. I suspect with what you've said she's just adjusting to her own curve. If so, while you keep an eye on her, she'll probably level out sometime soon and then keep to her curve. My ped was infuriating - DD maintained her height/weight at 10th percentile for 3 years, and ped kept going on about how she might "have problems" - even though she was clearly growing at the same rate as other kids - just on the small side. I eventually switched peds over it because her worry and advice simply didn't ring true. She is the spitting image of my DH, who is 5'5" and one of the healthiest humans I know - I don't know why that's so difficult to accept that she's just small. Our new doctor just says "well, she's small, but she's on the normal chart, so - she's normal". So yeah, keep an eye on it because she is going down in the percentiles, but remember it does happen.

My DS, on the other hand, takes after MY side of the family where the men are all over 6 feet and is consistently around 90th percentile for height. It sounds unfair to say, but probably easier for a girl to be short than a boy...

N&M - I don't think there's any issue with mushy pears! I offered DS a couple of licks of straight applesauce last week and he gobbled it and clamoured for more - I tried pears yesterday (was cooking with them and just offered him a taste - we're not officially "starting solids" yet!) and he was not impressed. Maybe not as sweet or something?

Pears sound yummy to me!

And I sort of feel like I should reiterate on the weight thing - DON'T panic! I'd just keep an eye on it. In our case the kids continue to drop percentiles - DD2 got to the point where not only did she not gain, but she lost a pound in 6 weeks (which when you only weighed 13 to begin with is not good). She wasn't even on the charts anymore. We've finally got her to the point where she is at the 10th percentile for weight, and as long as she maintains that curve everyone is happy.

Hunnylocs, you might want to take a look at these new WHO growth charts that someone posted - they're for breastfed babies, rather than the formula--based charts your ped is most likely using. Her percentages might look better on there. http://www.who.int/childgrowth/stand.../en/index.html

Thanks for the baby food site, I like the recipes... except it recommends starting solids at 4 months! It is so hard to wait, though... Just a few more weeks. I'm leaning towards yams as a first food. Yum...

*sigh* I'm getting tired of Ben's goopy eye. His big brother's blocked tear duct was cleared up by this age, but no luck so far with this one. I did massage the duct more often with the first baby, maybe it actually worked. Or maybe not, but I guess I'll have to start trying it.

Is anyone else with a second-or-later baby doing a baby book? I look at the baby book my mom made for me and it's really cool, then with each of my younger siblings the books get less and less complete, until my youngest brother hardly has anything written in his. I'm determined not to let that happen with my kids! (Plus I guess I enjoy data entry? I'm weird.) So far I'm doing it, though yesterday I had to go back and fill in half of July to catch up.

Right on 85% for height
Just above 15% for weight

Caleb actually does worse on the WHO charts. The pedi's charts they have him 90% for height and 25% for weight.

My poor little chunker EBF baby... she is at 98% for height and 98% weight. The doc even said, "Honey, I blew up the baby!"

Juju (1 wk away from 8 mos old!) ate some banana yesterday -- man, unlike her sisters, this girl will eat anything!

I read an article about more bad things showing up in baby formula today...makes me want to rip my hair out that they can't just KEEP HARMFUL STUFF OUT of something I HAVE to give to my BABY. Oh, I hate formula SO MUCH!! If we weren't stuck supplementing, I wouldn't be giving Ju solids at all yet; I'm almost hoping to replace formula with organic solids before Ju remembers that she is stubborn and chooses bottle over breast for good... Please keep nursing, Baby! Please keep lowering Mommy's breast cancer risk and your own risk of practically everything? Please? Mommy loves yooou!

We actually do have mini-'battles' pretty much daily where she turns her head purposefully away from the breast and arches her back and complains, while I hold my breast and try to get her head turned back toward me...because I'm all excited that Hey, there's still milk here; you missed some! but she is saying I'm done with that slow stuff; gimme the fast food! Sometimes, before finally bringing out the bottle, I squirt milk into her complaining mouth so I won't have to pump it instead. Sigh!

I have lost track of weeks, but I think Lucy is 24 weeks and a few days. 5 months and a bit. Nothing really to say ... she is adorable, sweet, delectable.
We just got back from a white water rafting trip and my mom looked after Lucy while we rafted. They got on a pontoon and met us for dinner. Both of them did really well...Lucy was content as ever, whomever she was with.

She is around 50% for growth, but I think she was taller and had a bigger head measurement at 4 months then her brother. Her brother weighed more at 4 months although he was a pound less at birth.

She goes for her 6mth appointment in September - she will be older then that as the doctor is away.

re: The journal book - I did buy a record keeping book for my second. I really wanted one, but cant say I am that good at keeping it current; in fact, I should go update it now. I was a 2nd child and my record book was pretty empty.

We gave DS some banana yesterday evening, on the eve of his 6-month birthday. I cut slices up into small pieces (not mashed) and popped one in his mouth. After giving me a funny look, he chewed it up and swallowed, then opened his mouth for more.

He did try to pick them up, but bananas are slippery... he ate about 5 little pieces but had trouble with the last one (perhaps bigger, or perhaps tired) so we stopped there. I'm calling it a success. We'll try it again this evening assuming that he seems happy today - so far so good.

This time 6 months ago, we were calling relatives to tell them that DS was born.. wow...

new here..

Hey everyone.. my girlfriend keri told me about this site yesterday and I've been reading the thread. I'm a sahm, work pt from home. My little Benjamin is 6 months and 3 days old. he started crawling this week and cut his first tooth yesterday. I came to this site to get support from others for EC and HBAC. I want to do both! I just got a potty yesterday for Benji and I'm going to give the EC a shot. Here's hoping it works! I also had Ben via csection and am hoping for a home birth for the next kid (whenever that happens!)

anyways, just wanted to jump in a say hi to everyone. I'm so glad my friend showed me this site!

Well we got a little chunker here too! The rolls on his legs are just delicious. In fact we'll be moving him up to the next size carseat next week (we had it shipped to g'rents house in Spain). I have a huge questions about that but maybe I should just ask them in the Fam Safety forum??? ie. here in France it seems to be the law to switch to ff at 9kg

So today we are off to Cannes to visit a friend this aft! I hope to also get to see Monaco too, and maybe the Italian riviera. Baby boy is usually good in the car, but sometimes it's a bit of drama and I end up pulling out a boob in the backseat while DH drives. So fingers crossed for peaceful driving.

We got an amber teething necklace yesterday in the mail. I took it off for sleep yesterday and put it on again this morning. Do you mamas really think it helps?

Next week we are off to Spain again. I'll post a picture from our last flight just because I think my little man is freaking adorable.

I also did something I vowed not to upon becoming a mama. I cut my hair. I like it though. Actually I just sat it the chair and said do whatever you think is best and the stylist had a blast (he said no one ever does that, haha)! I just didn't want to do the typical thing, but it actually is pretty great and I seem to have stopped shedding.

I think I might try and book something with an osteopath as my back is starting to bother me again in the same way as during the last months of pregnancy. I also want to get the boy adjusted too as there was some pushing that went on during his birth.

When you fly to spain do you happen to fly spanair? We are flying to barcelona on tuesday and was hoping I could get clarity on the luggage allowed for me and an in seat infant. All I can find is one bag for me and a carryon (diaperbag?) and then a pram/pushchair for the baby. Is that all she can have or do they let us have a little bag for her too? Can we put blankets int he bottom of the pram?

We aren't flying Spanair. This time we are living it up on Iberia, haha.

For the price of one of your tickets I'd consider bumping up to premium just to get the extra checked bag for baby's belongings! You can bring a stroller, but at the gate you'll have to fold it up and give it to an attendant (might not want loose things in the bottom as they might get lost). We've flown cheapie Euro airlines and have never been given baby luggage rights, even when baby's ticket was more expensive than one of ours (looking at you Ryanair ) We've always bought extra luggage as small squishy babies need at least a carry-on for themselves in our experience. Although maybe in a cruise ship cabin less is more!

hmmm... now if only I can figure out how to upgrade us... I think we will be ok bc we have to manuever a bag each plus the baby in the stroller. She will be in an infant car seat that attaches to the stroller, I hope that is ok!!! But do you think they really weigh your carry on?!

Did you buy her a seat? If not they won't let you bring a car seat without it counting as an extra piece of luggage (and she won't be able to sit in it either). Plus your stroller has to be one of those super compact ones that really fold down small (like MacLaren) or else they won't accept it. I know this because ours is too big! Do you really need the car seat?
As for weighing carry ons I just act super nonchalant and swing it over my shoulder making it seem lighter .
Good luck and Bon Voyage!

Oh really? I thought that I could just gate check the stroller/car seat combo. We were going to bring the car seat in case we needed to take a cab in Barcelona and because she can't sit by herself in the stroller. Are you sure about this? http://www.chiccousa.com/gear/travel...s-30-chic.aspx this is what we have. We have the seat in the stroller, otherwise it is not safe bc she can't sit on her own.

Oooh if I could trust a stylist to make my hair look that good, I'd be in the seat NOW! Gorgeous! I got my hair cut last month, and had a miscommunication with the stylist and she cut lots of layers in my hair - so now I can't put it back in a ponytail without lots of pins. And a ponytail is my only option so that DS doesn't swing from my hair when I pick him up!

Welcome Jessica! There's at least a couple of us here doing EC - we're doing so well with it and I almost want another baby just so I can try it from birth! Have you checked out the EC forum?
