Advice needed--BLEEDING...seeing urologist tomorrow am

Hi all,

I posted a few weeks ago about suspected UTI's in my 3 year old, non-circ'd. Well, he continues to have problems, he is discharging white stuff--smegma I assume? But he is also bleeding sometimes. This has been off and on for about 2 months. Sometimes he says it hurts, sometimes he doesn't. I've seen blood at least 10 times in the last 3 weeks, this morning it was about a quarter sized amount in his diaper. It is not in his urine, it is very obviously coming from under his foreskin. We've been to the dr. multiple times, finally got referred to a urologist. He is not retracted, and has not been retracted forcibly.

When he pees, he is swollen at the base and when you squeeze gently, more comes out and the swelling goes down.

I know some of this is normal, but it's been going on for 2 months...going on 3, and the blood is freaking me out. I'm being told there's no infection.

Anyone had anything like this happen?

Are you sure it's not normal separation? Sometimes it takes a while for the process to fully happen and a few months is certainly acceptable, especially if he's not having any fever or difficulty urinating. Be careful, doctors often retract, very quickly, despite parents standing right there & telling them not to.

For some urologists, circumcision is their bread and butter, so read this article before you go to be well prepared. Be especially vigilant if the want to do a catheter. Do not be afraid to say no to anything that doesn't sound right to you, whether it's test that sound unnecessary or treatments that sound overly aggressive. Don't be afraid to leave if you feel uncomfortable with the Dr or the situation. You can always seek a second opinion.

Hopefully though, s/he will actually be a good Dr and all my advice will just be paranoid ranting, but it is better to be prepared for the worst even though we hope for the best.

Does he play with himself a lot? Could he just be injuring himself? I know that the blood is scary, but it probably isn't that bad. DS had blood in his diapers a few times and it was just rectal fissures, but it scared the heck out of me.

I hope your little guy is ok.

I will also voice that normal separation of the foreskin from the glans/shaft will cause actual bleeding. Not LOTS of bleeding, but some, in some cases. Also some boys/men make more smegma than others, just like some women/girls make more vaginal fluid than others. Totally normal. UTI's are not totally normal, but they are not uncommon, either.

What worries you the most - the bleeding? Because if that's the case, they may force a separation and then "see what happens" if you are unwilling to circ. (which is normally what they will tell you - "circ, and then lets see what happens"). If it's a combination of things, I can tell you that a) boys who get UTI's w/any frequency continue to get them circ'ed or not. b) the balooning is totally normal and c) a little bit of fresh red blood is from the seapartion - stringy blood, darker blood, is usually from urine which can mean kidney or bladder infection.

Good luck, mama! I'd be watchful and make sure to keep his crotch area clean and dry, use some rescue remedy on it at night (just on the outside of the foreskin) or give him some rescue drops nightly.

What happened with the urologist ? With it being continous white discharge off and on bleeding I would definetly try an OTC yeast cream like Monistat or Vagisil with a dab on the tip of of the foreskin at nite time right when it's bedtime that way there will be no pee disturbing the yeast cream.

Is the bleeding on the white stuff or seperate as in spots or streaks ?

Yes bleeding can sometimes happen with seperation trauma but I usually seen the seperation trauma only happen ever few months to every few years in some boys but your son seems to have a continous thing happening for more than a couple of months other than that I would think of possible bacterial issue may be going on that would need antibiotic cream on the tip of foreskin not the one with the ingredient of neomycin that can cause senstivity reactions in some genital regions.

But more likely I hope the urologist did a culture otherwise if it's yeast and he prescribed antibiotic cream he will make the yeast issues more worse .
