Ocean Vista in Amagansett is reasonably priced, right on the beach, and 20 minutes from Montauk.

DS and I went to Lancaster county PA to see the train museums (yes there is more than one all close together) in Strasburg. when he was 2yo. We live about 10 minutes west of the George Washington bridge, and it only took us about 2-3 hours to get there (longer on the way back b/c I took a wrong turn towards Philly at rush hour.)

We stayed at the Bird-in-hand Family Inn, in Bird-in-Hand PA (yes that is the name of the town.) It was a really nice place to stay, but everything closed on sunday. It had playgrounds, pools, minigolf and so forth right there at the hotel. It looked like a lot of places in the area have similar facilities for families.

Poconos? Maybe near Jim Thorpe? There is a train ride, a butterfly preserve, kayaking, rafting, tubing. We went in the winter skiing and had a great time and were looking at going back again this winter.

You can camp in/near Camp May, NJ very cheaply. A few friends of ours do it every year.

If you are hotel people we just stayed at the Dolce Valley Forge in King of Prussia for $45 a night through Priceline. VERY nice hotel. Right near Valley Forge, close to Philidelphia.

We are going for a 3 day mini vacation this weekend to Lancaster PA. I have two boys, 3 & 2 yo, and I am 8m PG so we were limited with choices b/c of distance. This seemed right up their alley. We are going to Strasburg b/c it is all about trains in my house. Then we are doing a day at Dutch Wonderland...originally we were going to Sesame Place but I think next year will be better for them there due to height requirements. Then on our last day we may stop by Cherry Crest Farm.

.
The Cape May Zoo is free and awesome. Seriously, we were blown away by how nice it was. There is also a huge picnic and playground there.
